Bécaye Diop
Bécaye Diop (born 1945) is a Senegalese politician, who is a member of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) and has held several ministerial positions. Biography Originally from Fuladu (Upper Casamance), Diop achieved a from the for vocational training in Ziguinchor in 1961 and then became a schoolteacher, headmaster of an elementary school, and mayor of Kolda. In 2000, when President Abdoulaye Wade and the Senegalese Democratic Party came to power, he was named ministerial delegate for the ministry of education, in charge of vocational education, professional training, literacy and national languages. On 1 October 2002, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Youba Sambou was dismissed, following the sinking of the on 26 September 2002. On 6 November 2002, Bécaye Diop succeeded him as head of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Youba Sambou
Youba Sambou (born 1944) is a Senegalese politician from Casamance who served in the government of Senegal as Minister of the Armed Forces from 2000 to 2002. He also served as Mayor of Bignona and was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 2007. Biography Youba Sambou is of Jola descent and was born in Mlomp in Bignona Department in 1944. During the 1960s and 70s, he taught mathematics and physics at several lycées, before being appointed as a headmaster, initially in Diourbel and eventually (after a short administrative interlude in Paris) in Bignona in the 1990s. Alongside his teaching duties, he took an active role in the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS). When PDS came to power in 2000, Sambou was named Minister of the Armed Forces in the cabinet of Moustapha Niasse, replacing Cheikh Hamidou Kane Mathiara of the Socialist Party. The Armed Forces of Senegal () consists of about 17,000 personnel in the army, Senegalese Air Force, air force, navy, and gendarmerie. Politics in Senegal takes place within the framework of a presidential democratic republic. The President of Senegal is the head of state and government. Executive power in Senegal is concentrated in the president's hands. While legislative power is technically vested in both the government and the parliament, the parliament rarely introduces legislation or votes down legislation proposed by the government. Similarly, although the Judiciary is theoretically independent of the executive and the legislature, the executive branch seems to exert undue control over the judiciary. Senegal is one of the few African states that has never experienced a coup d'état or exceptionally harsh authoritarianism. Presidential elections were held in Senegal on 26 February 2012, amidst controversy over the constitutional validity of a third term for incumbent president Abdoulaye Wade. In the Runoff election, runoff on 25 March, Macky Sall defeated the incumbent president.
