Byblis (plant)
''Byblis'' ( ) is a small genus of carnivorous plants, sometimes termed the rainbow plants for the attractive appearance of their mucilage-covered leaves in bright sunshine. Native to Australia and New Guinea, it is the only genus in the family Byblidaceae. The first species in the genus was described by the English botanist Richard Anthony Salisbury in 1808. Eight species are now recognised. ''Byblis'' species look very similar to ''Drosera'' and '' Drosophyllum'', but are distinguished by their zygomorphic flowers, with five curved stamens off to one side of the pistil. These genera are in fact not closely related; modern classifications place ''Byblis'' in the Lamiales, while the sundews and ''Drosophyllum'' are now placed in the Caryophyllales. Karel Domin
Karel Domin (4 May 1882 – 10 June 1953) was a Czech botanist and politician. Biography Domin was 4 May 1882, Kutná Hora, Kingdom of Bohemia, Austria-Hungary. After gymnasium school studies in Příbram, he studied botany at the Charles University in Prague, and graduated in 1906. Between 1911 and 1913 he published several important articles on Australian taxonomy. In 1916 he was named as professor of botany. Domin specialised in phytogeography, geobotany and plant taxonomy. He became a member at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, published many scientific works and founded a botany institute at the university. The Domin scale, a commonly used means of classifying a standard area by the number of plant species found in that area, is named after him. ''Byblis gigantea'', commonly known as rainbow plant, is a species of carnivorous plant in the family Byblidaceae. It is endemic to Australia. Description The small perennial herb or sub-shrub has many branches and typically grows to a height of in height. It is a tall leafy plant with the leaf bases closely spaced. It has deep, woody perennial rootstock that the plant is able to resprout from the rhizomes after fire. It blooms between September and January producing pink-purple and white flowers.
