''By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga'' is a book of essays by Erica Friedman. Published by Journey Press in 2022, it was the first substantial English-language work to cover the history of yuri. Contents The book is a collection of essays, articles and lectures written by Friedman, covering the history of yuri over 13 chapters. It draws from work from her own blog and various other online and print publications, as well as original material written for the book itself. It details the genre's influences and beginnings in Japan from the 20th century to its growth and global expansion in the 21st century. Yuricon was an anime convention geared toward fans of yuri anime and manga. The first Yuricon event was held in 2003 in Newark, New Jersey with about 200 attending, although Yuricon has existed as an online entity since 2000. The event was organized by Yuricon, LLC., which continues to run Yuri-focused events of its own, collaborates with other organizations to hold unique events, and hosts contests. History In 2000, Erica Friedman founded Yuricon on Usenet with the name of "Anilesbocon" but this was changed to Yuricon in 2003 in an effort to better "celebrate Yuri in anime and manga." In 2003, the organization had a "three-day anime and manga convention" in Newark, New Jersey. Two years later, Yuricon hosted an event in Tokyo and co-sponsored Onna!, together with the Shoujo Arts Society, which focused on women's roles in animation and comics. Yuri (genre)
, also known by the ''wasei-eigo'' construction , is a genre of Japanese media focusing on intimate relationships between female characters. While lesbian, lesbian relationships are a commonly associated theme, the genre is also inclusive of works depicting emotional and spiritual relationships between women that are not necessarily romantic or sexual in nature. ''Yuri'' is most commonly associated with anime and manga, though the term has also been used to describe video games, light novels, and literature. Themes associated with ''yuri'' originate from Japanese lesbian fiction of the early twentieth century, notably the writings of Nobuko Yoshiya and literature in the Class S (genre), Class S genre. Manga depicting female homoeroticism began to appear in the 1970s in the works of artists associated with the Year 24 Group, notably Ryoko Yamagishi and Riyoko Ikeda. Jonathan Clements
Jonathan Michael Clements (born 9 July 1971) is a British author and scriptwriter. His non-fiction works include biographies of Confucius, Koxinga and Qin Shi Huang, as well as monthly opinion columns for '' Neo'' magazine. He is also the co-author of encyclopedias of anime and Japanese television dramas. Background Clements speaks both Chinese and Japanese, and many of his works relate to East Asia. He wrote his master's degree at the University of Stirling on manga and anime exports, predicting the rise of several trends in the international industry including back-to-front printing, direct American investment in anime, and the proliferation of attempts to substitute non-Japanese products. Subsequently, he translated over 70 anime and manga works for British distributors, and worked as a voice director and actor.
