Butterfly Train was an indie rock band formed in 1994 in the state of Idaho. It was led by bassist and vocalist Brett Nelson. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and do it yourself ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the music production, production techniques of dub music, dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, Film, cinema and modernist literature, literature. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. The sound of indie rock has its origins in the New Zealand Dunedin sound of the Chills, Tall Dwarfs, the Clean and the Verlaines, and early 1980s college rock radio stations who would frequently play jangle pop bands like the Smiths and R.E.M. Up Records
Up Records was a Seattle based independent record label founded in 1994 by Chris Takino and Rich Jensen. Some of the label's best-known artists were Duster (band), Duster, 764-HERO, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Quasi (band), Quasi and Tad (band), Tad. Chris Takino died of leukemia in 2000. The label was owned and managed by his partner Pete Ritchey until it was licensed to Sub Pop about 2018. The last update to the Up Records website was in 2007. Built To Spill
Built to Spill is an American indie rock band that formed in Boise, Idaho, in 1992. Centered on lead vocalist and guitarist Doug Martsch, the only permanent member, Built to Spill has released nine albums since its inception. Martsch originally envisioned the band to feature a changing set of backing musicians for each album, but eventually settled with a stable lineup for over a decade before returning to his original plan in 2012. Having received consistent critical acclaim throughout their career, three of the band's albums—''There's Nothing Wrong with Love, Perfect from Now On'' and '' Keep It Like a Secret''—placed in the top 50 of ''Pitchfork'''s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s list. Brett Nelson (musician)
Brett Nelson (born 1969) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter best known as the former bassist for the indie rock band Built to Spill. In high school, Nelson played in a band called Farm Days along with Doug Martsch and Andy Capps. Nelson's next band, Butterfly Train, released two albums on Up Records, in 1994 and 1996, before breaking up (Andy Capps was drummer for the latter album). In 1994, Nelson and Andy Capps joined Martsch's Built to Spill. Nelson has appeared on every album except the debut, ''Ultimate Alternative Wavers'' and ''Untethered Moon''. Nelson sings and plays guitar and keyboards for The Suffocation Keep, which released its debut album ''John Hughes Was Never So Wrong'' in 2002. The band completed a second album in 2004,''A Few Minor Modifications of the Stars''. The album was never released; however, the band did make it available for free download.
