Butetown (electoral Ward)
The Butetown ward (politics), electoral ward of Cardiff covers the Cardiff Bay area of the city, electing a councillor to Cardiff Council. Description The Butetown ward includes the areas of Butetown and Atlantic Wharf. It is located in the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth (UK Parliament constituency), Cardiff South and Penarth and the Senedd Cardiff South and Penarth (National Assembly for Wales constituency), constituency of the same name. Butetown ward is bounded by the wards of Grangetown, Cardiff, Grangetown (and the River Taff) to the west, Cathays (electoral ward), Cathays and Adamsdown to the north, Splott (electoral ward), Splott to the northeast. The ward also covers the island of Flat Holm, which is part of Cardiff though several miles off the coast. Cyncoed
Cyncoed ( ) is a community in the northeast of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. With many properties in the area fetching over £1 million, Cyncoed is considered to have some of the highest property prices in the country. Cyncoed overlooks the city centre of Cardiff, near Roath Park, with views of the surrounding mountains. Background and development In 1887 John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute offered of marshland to Cardiff Council, for use as a public park. In 1894, Roath Park was officially opened to the public. Work initially focused on creating the lake from an area of marshland. In 1915 a lighthouse was constructed in the lake containing a scale model of the ' Terra Nova' ship to commemorate Captain Scott's ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910. 2012 Cardiff Council Election
The 2012 Cardiff Council election took place on Thursday 3 May 2012 to elect members of Cardiff Council in Wales. This was the same day as the national 2012 Welsh local elections. Vaughan Gething
Humphrey Vaughan ap David Gething (born 15 March 1974) is a Welsh Labour Co-op politician who served as First Minister of Wales from March to August 2024, and served as leader of Welsh Labour from March to July 2024, making him the first black leader of any European country. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Cardiff South and Penarth since 2011. Gething was born in Zambia to a Welsh father and Zambian mother. He moved to Britain as a child and studied law at Aberystwyth University and Cardiff Law School, at the University of Cardiff. He trained as a solicitor with Cardiff-based firm Thompsons and subsequently specialised in employment law. Betty Campbell
Betty Campbell (6 November 1934 – 13 October 2017, born Rachel Elizabeth Johnson) was a Welsh community activist, who was Wales' first black head teacher. Born into a poor household in Butetown, she won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff. Campbell later trained as a teacher, eventually becoming head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She put into practice innovative ideas on the education of children and was actively involved in the community.
