Butch Nieman
Elmer Le Roy "Butch" Nieman (February 8, 1918 – November 2, 1993) was a Major League Baseball outfielder who played for the Boston Braves from 1943 to 1945. He played collegiately at Kansas State University from 1938–1939. He was a native of Herkimer, Kansas. Nieman is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He was a regular for Boston during much of his three years with the team. He finished in the league's TOP TEN for triples in 1943, for home runs in 1944, and for at bats per home run in 1945. Career totals include 332 games played, 269 hits, 37 home runs, 167 RBI, 147 runs, a .256 batting average, and a slugging percentage of .432. He was a slightly below average defensive outfielder for his era, and in his 317 appearances had a fielding percentage of .961. One defensive highlight was 13 assists in 1944. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). These numbers are shorthand designations useful in baseball scorekeeping and are not necessarily the same as the squad numbers worn on player uniforms. Run (baseball)
In baseball, a run is scored when a player advances around first, second and third base and returns safely to home plate, touching the bases in that order, before three outs are recorded and all obligations to reach base safely on batted balls are met or assured. A player may score by hitting a home run or by any combination of plays that puts him safely "on base" (that is, on first, second, or third) as a runner and subsequently brings him home. Once a player has scored a run, they may not attempt to score another run until their next turn to bat. The object of the game is for a team to score more runs than its opponent. In baseball, an assist (denoted by A) is a defensive statistic, baseball being one of the few sports in which the ''defensive'' team controls the ball. An assist is credited to every defensive player who fields or touches the ball (after it has been hit by the batter) prior to the recording of a putout, even if the contact was unintentional. For example, if a ball strikes a player's leg and bounces off him to another fielder, who tags the baserunner, the first player is credited with an assist. A fielder can receive a maximum of one assist per out recorded. An assist is also credited if a putout would have occurred, had another fielder not committed an error.
