Les McCann
Leslie Coleman McCann (September 23, 1935 – December 29, 2023) was an American jazz pianist and vocalist. He is known for his innovations in soul jazz and his Swiss Movement, 1969 recording of the protest song "Compared to What". His music has been widely sampled in hip hop. Early life Leslie Coleman McCann was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on September 23, 1935. He grew up in a musical family with four brothers and one sister, most of whom sang in church choirs. His father was a fan of jazz music and his mother was known to hum opera tunes around the house. As a youth, McCann played the tuba and drums and performed in his school's marching band. As a pianist, he was largely self-taught. He explained that he received piano lessons for only a few weeks as a six-year-old before his teacher died. Franz Lehár ( ; ; 30 April 1870 – 24 October 1948) was an Austro-Hungarian composer. He is mainly known for his operettas, of which the most successful and best known is '' The Merry Widow'' (''Die lustige Witwe''). Life and career Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Kingdom of Hungary (now Komárno, Slovakia), the eldest son of Franz Lehar Sr. (1838–1898), an Austrian bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army and Christine Neubrandt (1849–1906), a Hungarian woman from a family of German descent. Paul Nelson Humphrey (October 12, 1935 – January 31, 2014) was an American jazz and R&B drummer. Biography Humphrey was born in Detroit and began playing drums at age eight, taking private lessons in Detroit. In high school he played baritone horn, trombone and drums in the school band. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Navy and studied under Kenneth J. Roderick Victor Gaskin (November 23, 1934 – July 14, 2012) was an American jazz bassist. Gaskin was born in The Bronx, New York (state), New York and moved to Los Angeles in 1962. He started playing with Paul Horn (jazz musician), Paul Horn and Red Mitchell and went on to become one of many bass players for the Jazz Crusaders. He also recorded with Curtis Amy and Dupree Bolton, before becoming a part of the West Coast jazz, West Coast jazz scene, accompanying Buddy Collette, Shelly Manne, and Bud Shank. Ludwig Herzer, born Ludwig Herzl, (born 18 March 1872 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, died 17 April 1939 in St. Gallen, Switzerland) was an Austrian physician and librettist. Life Ludwig Herzl, later better known under his pseudonym ''Ludwig Herzer'', was born on 18 March 1872 in Vienna, at the time part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. There he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and worked as a gynecologist as his main profession. He also wrote operetta librettos, often in collaboration with other well-known librettists such as Alfred Grünwald or Fritz Löhner, for Edmund Eysler, Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz, among others. Fritz Löhner-Beda
Fritz Löhner-Beda (24 June 1883 – 4 December 1942), born Bedřich Löwy, was an Austrian librettist, lyricist and writer. Once nearly forgotten, many of his songs and tunes remain popular today. He was murdered in Auschwitz III Monowitz concentration camp. Life Löhner-Beda was born Bedřich Löwy in Wildenschwert, Bohemia (present-day Ústí nad Orlicí, Czech Republic) in 1883. In 1888, his family moved to Vienna, and in 1896 changed their surname to the less Jewish surname Löhner. Having passed his Matura exams, he began the study of law at the University of Vienna, where he became a member of the Jewish Kadimah student association. After he had obtained his doctorate, he worked as a lawyer from 1908 onwards. A dedicated football player, he was among the founders of the Hakoah Vienna sports club in 1909. Yours Is My Heart Alone
"Yours Is My Heart Alone" or "You Are My Heart's Delight" (German: "") is an aria from the 1929 operetta ''The Land of Smiles'' (') with music by Franz Lehár and the libretto by Fritz Löhner-Beda and Ludwig Herzer. It was for many years associated with the tenor Richard Tauber, for whom it was written. The aria is sung by the character of Prince Sou-Chong in act 2. An American version of the show opened on Broadway theatre, Broadway in 1946 starring Tauber but it soon closed as Tauber had throat trouble. The aria has been sung in Italian (as "Tu che m'hai preso il cuor" [You who have taken my heart]) by a few operatic tenors, notably Giuseppe Di Stefano, Mario Del Monaco, and Luciano Pavarotti. Composition Written in D-flat major, Lehár had composed parts of the song already in 1923 when the original version of the operetta premiered under the title ' (The Yellow Jacket).
