Buster Millerick
Michael E. "Buster" Millerick (November 30, 1905 – September 30, 1986) was an American Hall of Fame racehorse trainer. Early life Michael "Buster" Millerick was born in Petaluma, California. He learned to train horses at his cousin's ranch in Schellville where Larson Family Winery is located today. The Millerick family raised horses, ran the largest rodeo stock line in California and operated a rodeo. Buster's uncles Tom, Jack and George also trained thoroughbred racehorses. Career Buster Millerick began working as a professional trainer while in his twenties. Shortly after Santa Anita Park opened in Arcadia, California in 1934, Millerick was hired to condition horses for Charles Howard and would work under head trainer Tom Smith when the stable acquired Seabiscuit in 1936. San Carlos Handicap
The San Carlos Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race once held during the third week of February at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, but now run in March. The Grade III stakes race is open to horses, aged three and up, willing to race seven furlongs on the dirt and currently offers a purse of $200,000. Inaugurated in 1935 as the San Carlos Handicap, it was raced at a distance of miles through 1939. It was run in both January and December 1949. It became known as the San Carlos Stakes beginning with its 2012 running. It wasn't raced due to World War II between 1942 and 1945. Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar Fairgrounds is an event venue in Del Mar, California. It hosts the annual San Diego County Fair. The venue sits on a property along the Pacific Ocean coastline. La Brea Stakes
The La Brea Stakes is a Grade I American thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies over a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt track held annually in late December at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, USA. California Derby
The California Derby was a race for Thoroughbred horses held early in the year at Golden Gate Fields until the track's closure on June 9, 2024. An ungraded stakes, it was open to three-year-olds at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on a Tapeta surface. The Derby last offered a purse of $100,000. In a March 29, 1898 column, the ''Daily Racing Form'' wrote that the California Derby was one of the most important races in California and the most important for three-year-old horse. Sport Page Handicap
The Sport Page Handicap was an American thoroughbred horse race run annually at Aqueduct Race Track in Ozone Park, Queens, New York for three-year-olds and up. Formerly a Grade III event, it's set at a distance of 7 furlongs on the dirt and offers a purse of $150,000 added. The Sport Page is named in honor of the horse who won the East View Stakes at Jamaica, New York in 1948. Run at Jamaica prior to 1959; at Belmont Park in 1968, 1971, 1995, 2001 and 2003, this race has been run at Aqueduct in all other years. Open to all ages prior to 1959, and run at the distance of six furlongs from 1953 to 1993, then at seven furlongs from 1994 to 2000.
