Buster Guzzardo
Sebastian John Guzzardo Sr. (March 25, 1923 – November 26, 2021), known as Buster Guzzardo, was an American politician from the state of Louisiana. He served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from the 72nd district from 1987 to 1996. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army as a military police officer from 1943 to 1945. In 1996, Guzzardo was indicted on 11 federal charges of obstructing law enforcement, extortion, conspiracy, conducting an illegal gambling business, aiding racketeering and mail fraud relating to a video poker Video poker is a casino game based on five-card draw poker. Robert Weldon Russell III, known as Weldon Russell (born 1946), is a Democrat and former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives who served from District 72 between 1984 and 1988 during the third administration of Governor Edwin Washington Edwards. One of fourteen candidates in Louisiana's 5th congressional district special election held on October 19, 2013, Russell finished in eighth place with 2,554 votes (2 percent). Tangipahoa Parish (; French: ''Paroisse de Tangipahoa'') is a parish located in the southeast corner of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 121,097. The parish seat is Amite City, while the largest city is Hammond. Southeastern Louisiana University is located in Hammond. Lake Pontchartrain borders the southeast side of the parish. Independence, originally known as Uncle Sam, is a town in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,665 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The move to establish Independence as a town was led in the early 20th century by State Representative Harry D. Wilson, who subsequently served from 1916 until his death early in 1948 as the Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry. Wilson was a son of Dr. and Mrs. William D. Wilson. In 1856, Dr. Wilson had built a store in Independence, which remained for years the oldest building in the community. Harry Wilson worked in the parish seat of Amite in the general store of the merchant Jacob Stern at a time when Tangipahoa Parish did not yet depend on the strawberry crop.
