Burr Baldwin
Burr Browning Baldwin (June 13, 1922 – August 20, 2007) was an American professional football player. He played college football for the UCLA Bruins, and became the school's first player to receive All-American honors. Baldwin played pro football for three years with the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. Biography Baldwin attended Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield, California. He attended college at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he played for the Bruins as an end from 1940 to 1942. In 1943, he put his education and playing career on hiatus to enter the U.S. Army during World War II. He served from May 1943 to July 1946 and became an infantry captain in three campaigns in the European theater of operations. After the war, he returned to UCLA, and in 1946, became the first UCLA football player to earn All-America honors. End (gridiron Football)
An end in American and Canadian football is a player who lines up at either end of the line of scrimmage, usually beside the tackles. Rules state that a legal offensive formation must always consist of seven players on the line of scrimmage and that the player on the end of the line constitutes an eligible receiver. Before the advent of two platoons, in which teams fielded distinct defensive and offensive units, players that lined up on the ends of the line on both offense and defense were referred to simply as "ends". The position was used in this sense until roughly the 1960s. On offense, an end who lines up close to the other linemen is known as a tight end and is the only lineman who aside from blocking can run or catch passes. History ''The Bakersfield Californian'' is the direct descendant of Kern County's first newspaper, ''The Weekly Courier'', which was first published on Aug. 18, 1866, in Havilah, California.
