Burnside Project
Burnside Project is a New York–based electropop, indie rock band featuring Richard Jankovich, Gerald Hammill, and Paul Searing. In 2000, Jankovich released the self-titled Burnside Project CD independently which led to interest from record labels including Bar/None, whom Jankovich signed with in 2002. The album has been described as "some sort of bizarre pairing of DJ Spooky and Paul Westerberg." This album was subsequently re-mastered and re-packaged for wide release in 2007 on Fraga Records. Burnside Project's Bar/None debut, The Networks, the Circuits, the Streams, the Harmonies was released in 2003. The album began charting on college radio stations across the country (including heavy rotation on Seattle’s KEXP), and received high praise in mainstream publications, earning an A- in SPIN and placement on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List.” It was also nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize that year by acclaimed writer/director, Cameron Crowe. Electropop
Electropop is a hybrid music genre combining elements of electronic and pop genres. Writer Hollin Jones has described it as a variant of synth-pop with heavy emphasis on its electronic sound. The genre was developed in the 1980s and saw a revival of popularity and influence in the late 2000s. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Bar/None Records
Bar/None Records is an independent record label based in Hoboken, New Jersey. Early history Tom Prendergast started Bar/None in early 1986 in Hoboken, New Jersey. Having previously worked in pirate radio and booked and promoted bands in his native Ireland, Prendergast moved to Hoboken in 1982. The first release on Bar/None was by Rage to Live, whose leader, Glenn Morrow, soon became a partner in the label. Morrow had already built a network of contacts in the alternative music community having toured nationally with his previous band, The Individuals, and had also worked in the A&R department of Warner Bros. and as the managing editor of ''New York Rocker'' magazine. In 2000, Prendergast left New Jersey and moved back to Ireland, sold his shares to Morrow. Big Mother Gig
Big Mother Gig is an indie rock band originally founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and currently based in Los Angeles, CA, by Richard Jankovich. While attending Marquette University in Milwaukee in the 1990s, Richard Jankovich formed Big Mother Gig with Rob Due, Jason Borkowicz and Charles Watson. In 1993, they released "My Social Commentary." In 1994, Rob Due was replaced by Riz Rashid and they released "Transition EP." Borkowicz and Watson left in 1995 and were ultimately replaced by Brady Roehl (drums) and Matt Deede (bass.) In 1996, Big Mother Gig released "Smiling Politely" and broke up when Jankovich moved to New York City. From 1992 to 1996, Big Mother Gig played over 150 concerts around the Midwest.
