Burning Daylight (song)
"Burning Daylight" is a song by Dutch singers Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper, released on 1 March 2023. The song represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 after the artists were internally selected by AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision Song Contest Internal selection A submission period was opened by the broadcaster on 17 May 2022 where artists and composers were able to submit their entries until 31 August 2022. Each artist and songwriter was able to submit a maximum of three songs, which were judged by a selection commission consisting of AVROTROS general director Eric van Stade, television presenter and author Cornald Maas, singer and television presenter Jan Smit, radio DJs Hila Noorzai, Carolien Borgers and Sander Lantinga. Mia Nicolai
Michaja Nicolaï (; born 7 March 1996), known simply as Mia Nicolai, is a Dutch singer, songwriter and actress. She represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 alongside Dion Cooper with the song "Burning Daylight". Early life Michaja Nicolaï was born on 7 March 1996 in Amsterdam as the second daughter of lawyer and Party for the Animals politician Peter Nicolaï and Russian-born musician and composer Marynka Nicolaï-Krylova. She started taking drama and ballet classes at the age of three, which, according to herself, sparked an interest in music. She later started taking piano and violin lessons. Career 2018–2022: First singles In 2018, Mia Nicolai released her first single, a cover of American composer Glenn Miller's "At Last". In 2020, she released "Set Me Free" and "Mutual Needs", of which the latter was featured on DJ Zane Lowe's radio show. Jan Smit (born 31 December 1985) is a Dutch singer, television host, and actor. Smit mostly sings songs in the Dutch language, in a genre known as ''Volendam music''. Cornald Maas is a Dutch television presenter who has been known for presenting talk shows in the Netherlands. He is the brother of Frans Maas. Early career He was an editor involved in ''The Scream of the Lion'' ( VARA) with Paul de Leeuw, ''Sonja on Saturday'' (VARA) with Sonja Barend and ''Rolling Fire'' ( NOS) with Philip Freriks and Leoni Jansen. Dion Cuiper (; born 29 November 1993), known professionally as Dion Cooper, is a Dutch singer-songwriter. He represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 alongside Mia Nicolai with the song "Burning Daylight".' Early life and education Cuiper was born on 29 November 1993 and grew up in Wassenaar, South Holland, a suburb of The Hague. His father, who used to be a drummer in a funk band, introduced him to the music of, among others, Toto, the Police, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Cuiper developed an interest for music and began playing the guitar at the age of 15. He later started writing and singing his own songs. AVROTROS
AVROTROS () is a Dutch radio and television broadcaster that is part of the Dutch public broadcasting system. It was founded in 2014 as the result of a merger between the Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep (AVRO) and the Televisie Radio Omroep Stichting (TROS). The name AVROTROS has been used for jointly produced programmes since 1 January 2014. Since 7 September 2014, all existing AVRO and TROS programmes have also been broadcast under the name AVROTROS. Building Prior to 2014, the AVRO was housed in the building in Hilversum from 2000, while the TROS operated from the former Christelijk Lyceum, also in Hilversum, from 1970.
