Burning Cities
''Burning Cities'' is the fifth studio album by Scottish punk rock and new wave band Skids, released on 12 January 2018. Produced by Killing Joke bassist Youth, this is the band's first studio album in 36 years, since the release of '' Joy'' in November 1981. It is their first album to feature Big Country father-and-son guitarists, Bruce and Jamie Watson, the second with drummer Mike Baillie, and third with founding bassist William Simpson. Tracks 5, 7, 9 and 11 are co-written by Martin Metcalfe. The album reached number 28 in the charts. It is also the first album not to feature any contribution from former guitarist Stuart Adamson, who died in 2001. Skids (band)
Skids are a Scottish punk rock and new wave band, formed in Dunfermline in 1977 by Stuart Adamson (guitar, keyboards, percussion and backing vocals), William Simpson (bass guitar and backing vocals), Thomas Kellichan (drums) and Richard Jobson (vocals, guitar and keyboards). Their biggest successes were the 1979 single " Into the Valley" and the 1980 album '' The Absolute Game.'' In 2016, the band announced a 40th-anniversary tour of the UK with their original singer Richard Jobson. History Early years (1977–1979) Skids played their first gig on 19 August 1977 at the Bellville Hotel in Pilmuir Street, Dunfermline, Scotland. Within six months they had released the ''Charles'' EP on the No Bad record label, created by Sandy Muir, a Dunfermline music-shop-owner-turned-manager. New Wave Music
New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock, including punk itself. Youth (musician)
Martin Glover (born 27 December 1960), better known by his stage name Youth, is a British record producer and musician, best known as a founding member and bassist of the rock band Killing Joke. He is also a member of the Fireman, along with Paul McCartney. Early career Martin Glover was born on 27 December 1960 in Slough, at that point part of Buckinghamshire, England. He attended Kingham Hill School, an independent private school in Oxfordshire, where he met Alex Paterson, who would become a roadie for Glover's band Killing Joke, and later founder of The Orb. Naming himself "Youth" after the roots reggae Rastafari chanter Big Youth, in 1977 he joined punk rock band the Rage, who toured with the Adverts. Richard Jobson (television Presenter)
Richard Jobson (born 6 October 1960) is a Scottish filmmaker (director, writer, producer) who also works as a television presenter. He is also known as the singer-songwriter of the band Skids. Early life Jobson was born in Kirkcaldy and grew up in Crosshill, Ballingry and Fife, the son of a miner and a worker at Rosyth Dockyard. He attended St Columba's Roman Catholic High School, Dunfermline. His family were of Irish Catholic descent. Skids Jobson is the lead singer with the punk rock group Skids, whose original run was from 1977 -1982. Jobson's singing style with Skids was highly distinctive, and he wrote the lyrics, while Stuart Adamson wrote most of the music. Stuart Adamson
William Stuart Adamson (11 April 1958 – 16 December 2001) was a Scottish rock guitarist and singer. Adamson began his career in the late 1970s as a founding member and performer with the punk rock band Skids. After leaving Skids in 1981, he formed Big Country and was the band's lead singer and guitarist. The group's commercial heyday was in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he was a member of the alternative country band The Raphaels. In the late 1970s the British music journalist John Peel referred to his musical virtuosity as a guitarist as "a new Jimi Hendrix". Martin Metcalfe is a singer and artist from Bathgate, Scotland. He previously played in Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, and Angelfish. He is currently in bands called The Fornicators and the Filthy Tongues, and also paints. Bruce Watson (Scottish Guitarist)
Bruce William Watson (born March 11, 1961) is a Canadian-born Scottish guitarist, best known for being a member of Big Country. Early life and career Watson was born in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. He moved with his family to Scotland as a toddler. Prior to joining Big Country, Watson had been a member of several Fife-based new wave bands including the Delinquents and Eurosect. Role in Big Country Watson's role in the band was primarily as a supporting guitarist. He typically contributed rhythmic textures ("Wonderland," "Lost Patrol") and repetitive melodic fills ("In a Big Country," "Look Away") which underpinned verses, contrasting with Stuart Adamson's more straightforward chord work in these sections. Big Country
Big Country are a Scottish rock band formed in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1981. The height of the band's popularity was in the early to mid 1980s, although it has retained a cult following for many years since. The band's music incorporated Scottish folk and martial music styles, and the band engineered their guitar-driven sound to evoke the sound of bagpipes, fiddles, and other traditional folk instruments. Killing Joke
Killing Joke are an English rock band from Notting Hill, London, England, formed in 1979 by Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards), Paul Ferguson (drums), Geordie Walker (guitar) and Youth (bass). Their first album, '' Killing Joke'', was released in 1980. After the release of ''Revelations'' in 1982, bassist Youth was replaced by Paul Raven. The band achieved mainstream success in 1985 with both the album '' Night Time'' and the single " Love Like Blood".
