The Burnie Gift is a professional footrace held in Burnie, Tasmania during an annual sports carnival, held on a grass track at West Park Oval on New Year's Eve In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve refers to the evening, or commonly the entire day, of the last day of the year, 31 December, also known as Old Year's Day. The Burnie Gift is a sprint event conducted over the traditional 'Gift' distance of 120 metres. Athletes are allocated handicaps with a range from scratch (running the full 120 metres) to the current limit of 12.00 metres. An athlete off 12.00m would run 108 metres. Most athletes (and winners) run from a handicap between 5.0m and 10.0m, thereby covering anywhere from 115m to 110m. Torrie Lewis (born 8 January 2005) is an Australian track and field athlete who competes as a sprinter. She has won Australian national titles over 100m and 200m. In January 2024, she set a new Australian 100m national record of 11.10 seconds. Early life Lewis was born in Nottingham, England to a father of Jamaican and Indian descent and a mother of Scottish descent. At the age of six she moved to Australia and was a promising gymnast in her early years in Newcastle, New South Wales, before turning her full attention to the track. She later moved to Brisbane, Queensland where she attended St Peters Lutheran College. Adam Coote
Adam Coote is an Australian rules football boundary umpire and sprinter. He has umpired 383 games, including 31 final matches and five grand finals (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2010R) since making his debut in the 2005 season. In 2006 he was awarded the Bill Sutton Medallion for the best first or second year AFL boundary umpire. He continued to build on that early success and was the All Australian boundary umpire in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He was also awarded the Murray Williams Shield in 2012 for his contribution to the AFLUA and umpiring. Coote has umpired the third highest number of AFL games for a boundary umpire. Ashley Moloney (born 13 March 2000) is an Australian decathlete. He won bronze at the 2020 Olympic Games, the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in the decathlon. Early life Moloney attended school in Browns Plains, a suburb in Logan Qld. Moloney was the fastest at primary school and enjoyed the crowd that gathered when he broke school high jump records. He competed in jumps, triple/high/pole and sprints for his school, region and state. In 2015, aged 15, he won the Australian All Schools U16 high jump title with a leap of 2.00 metres. Hana Basic (born 22 January 1996) is an Australian sprinter who competes in the 100 metres. Basic was selected to represent Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's 100 m event. She studied for a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education at Deakin University. Jack Hale (born 22 May 1998) is an Australian sprinter. Hale was born in Hobart and was the winner of Australian national schools championships in the 100m sprint and long jump. In 2016, he broke the Australian under-20 100m sprint record with a time of 10.21s and finished 2nd in the 100m event at the Australian Athletics Championships. He was a member of the Australian relay team which finished 4th at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, along with Rohan Browning, Joshua Clarke and Trae Williams. Joshua James Ross (born 9 February 1981) is an indigenous Australian track and field sprinter. He was national 100-metre (100m) champion for a record seven times and competed for Australia at the 2004 and 2012 Summer Olympics.
