Bunnings Group Limited, trading as Bunnings Warehouse or Bunnings, is an Australian hardware and garden centre chain. The chain has been owned by Wesfarmers since 1994, and has stores in Australia and New Zealand. Bunnings was founded in Perth, Western Australia in 1886, by brothers Arthur and Robert Bunning, who had emigrated from England. Initially, a limited company focused on sawmilling, it became a public company in 1952 and subsequently expanded into the retail sector, purchasing several hardware stores. Bunnings began to expand into other states in the 1990s and opened its first warehouse-style store in Melbourne in 1994. As of 2022, the chain had 381 stores and over 53,000 employees, with a 68% market share in the Australian do it yourself hardware market; competing chains include Mitre 10, Home Hardware and various independent retailers around Australia. A sausage sizzle is a community event in Australia and New Zealand to cook and serve sausages in bread (also referred to as sausage sandwiches or sausage sizzles) which are grilled or barbecued sausages (most commonly beef or pork) served in sliced bread or a bun with grilled onions and various condiments, most commonly tomato sauce, barbecue sauce or mustard. The term "sausage sizzle" came into common use in the 1980s and is used primarily to refer to the barbecuing event, but also to the sausage itself, mostly in Western Australia. Robert Bunning
Robert Bunning (13 December 1859 – 12 August 1936) was an English-born Western Australian businessman involved in the construction, timber, and sawmill industries. He co-founded with his younger brother Arthur (1863–1929) the company Bunning Bros, the predecessor to the modern-day retailer Bunnings. Early life Bunning was born in Hackney, London, on 13 December 1859 to carpenter Joseph Bunning and his wife Jane, née Bain. Bunning became a carpenter's apprentice, travelling across London for work. The Bunning family moved to Boston, America in 1872, where Joseph Bunning found work with church buildings. The Bunnings moved back to London, though Robert and his younger brother Arthur initially stayed in Chicago for work; by the 1880s they had returned to London to help their father erect a church spire. Charles Bunning
Charles R. Bunning (1 March 1905 – 3 June 1994) was a West Australian businessman who played an early significant role in the development of major retailer Bunnings. Biography Charles was a son of Robert Bunning, an English migrant who, with his brother Arthur, formed Bunning Brothers in 1886. The firm developed into one of Australia's largest timber companies. Charles and his brothers Joe and Tom enlarged the business after their father's death. They made bricks and during World War II joined the rival Perth group Millars at the request of the federal Ministry of Munitions. As shipbuilders they built the small snake boats used by Z force to land on Japanese-occupied land in Asia. Harris Scarfe is an Australian retailer that sells bed linen, kitchenware, homewares, electrical appliances and apparel. It was founded in 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia and has more than 50 stores nationally. In 2015, ownership of Harris Scarfe was transferred to Steinhoff Asia Pacific, an international retail and manufacturing conglomerate listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange. Home Hardware (previously known as Home Timber & Hardware) is an Australian retail hardware chain. It is Australia's third-biggest hardware chain after Bunnings and Mitre 10, the latter of which is its parent company. Mitre 10 is an Australian retail and trade hardware store chain. Operations are based on a cooperative system, where the store owners are members of the National group. The chain name references the mitre joint. There are over 400 "Mitre 10" locations throughout Australia. History The move to set up a co-operative group of hardware stores originated from a meeting of seven men who would become Mitre 10's founders – Tom Molomby, Tom Danaher, Reg Buchanan, Jack Womersley, Ian Nisbet, Bill Davey and Bill Wilson – held at Buchanan's home in Balwyn, Victoria, on 29 June 1959.
