Bukit Panjang ( ) is a Planning Areas of Singapore, planning area and New towns of Singapore, residential town located in the West Region, Singapore, West Region of Singapore. A portion of this town is situated on a low-lying elongated hill. The planning area is bounded by Bukit Batok to the west, Choa Chu Kang to the northwest, Sungei Kadut to the north, the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Central Water Catchment to the east, and Bukit Timah to the south. Bukit Panjang New Town is located at the northern portion of the planning area. Bukit Panjang has an average elevation of 36m/118 ft. The town is categorised into seven subzones, namely Jelebu, Bangkit, Fajar, Saujana, Senja, Dairy Farm, and Nature Reserve. Etymology Bukit Panjang means "long hill" in Malay language, Malay. Bukit Panjang Government High School (BPGHS) is a co-educational government autonomous secondary school in Choa Chu Kang, Singapore. History BPGHS was formed in the 1960's with the merging of Bukit Panjang Secondary School and Chua Chu Kang Government Chinese Middle School into a single school building at Jalan Teck Whye. It was the first integrated government school in Singapore. The spirit of the school's beginning is described on the cover of the first school magazine: "Dominating the Bukit Panjang horizon are the twin peaks of Bukit Panjang—two peaks but one hill—symbolic of the integrated Chinese and English streams of education which work and play together as one in the valley below." Bukit Panjang MRT/LRT station ( ) is a Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (Singapore), Light Rail Transit (LRT) interchange station on the Downtown MRT line, Downtown line (DTL) and the Bukit Panjang LRT line (BPLRT) in Singapore. Located in the namesake estate of Bukit Panjang, the station is at the junction of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Petir Road. The station serves the commercial buildings of Bukit Panjang Plaza, Hillion Mall, and Junction 10. It forms a part of the Bukit Panjang Bus Interchange, Bukit Panjang Integrated Transport Hub (BPITH), which also contains a bus interchange. Bukit Panjang railway station was a railway station on the Singapore-Kranji Railway which served Bukit Panjang from 1903 to an unknown date. History Bukit Panjang railway station was opened to the public on sometime between July and December 1903, on Choa Chu Kang Road, along Bukit Timah Road, as an infill station between Bukit Timah station and Woodlands station. The station was built near the military exercise camp and range, and helped the surrounding neighbourhoods develop, as it attracted residents. The station was also near a rubber plantation. A post office was built at the station on 21 March 1924, and opened on 1 April 1924. The Bukit Panjang Single Member Constituency is a Single Member Constituency (SMC) located in the western area of Singapore. It is managed by Holland–Bukit Panjang Town Council. The current Member of Parliament for the constituency is Liang Eng Hwa from the People's Action Party (PAP). Electoral history Bukit Panjang Constituency was created in 1955. In 1988, the constituency was renamed Bukit Panjang Single Member Constituency following the establishment of Group Representation Constituencies (GRC). Constituencies having a single MP after 1988 were thus called Single Member Constituencies. During the 1991 general election, the constituency was absorbed into Sembawang GRC. In the 2006 electoral boundary redrawing, Bukit Panjang SMC was recreated from Holland–Bukit Panjang GRC, which had absorbed the ward in 2001.
