''Buffalo Rising'' is an online magazine founded by Newell Nussbaumer in 2003 as a way to cover grassroots movements, Urban planning and development, and activism in Buffalo, New York. The format was originally a tri-annual and later a monthly printed paper with a small online blog to supplement it. The online blog quickly gained popularity, and in 2004 Buffalo Rising Online was launched. The magazine was originally a monthly print newspaper which now publishes exclusively online. A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. A grassroots movement is one that uses the people in a given district, region or community as the basis for a political or economic movement. Grassroots movements and organizations use collective action from the local level to effect change at the local, regional, national or international level.
