Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College
Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College is a co-educational secondary school in Hong Kong. The school opened in 1977 and as of 2016 had approximately 350 students. It is run by the Hong Kong Buddhist Association and sponsored by Po Lin Monastery. It is a Direct Subsidy Scheme institution that charges tuition fees. Students can pick between English or Cantonese as their medium of instruction. Situated in Tai O, it is the first co-ed secondary school on Lantau Island. Around 2009 the school had annual losses of $5 million HKD with 280 students. In hopes of "reduc ngannual losses" the school became a Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) school. According to Elaine Yau of the ''South China Morning Post'', financial performance improved subsequently during the principalship of Eric Yuon Fuk-lung, thanks in part to significant staffing cuts. Tai O Road
Tai O Road ( zh, t=大澳道, p=Dà'ào Dào, cy=daai6 ou3 dou6) is a main road in Islands District, Hong Kong. It is the west-most part of the main roads in south Lantau Island. It starts halfway down the side of Keung Shan, near Kwun Yam Monastery and Hang Pui, and runs downhill to the fishing town of Tai O, the only road access for the town. The road connects to Keung Shan Road and then South Lantau Road towards the rest of Lantau. It is around 2.7 kilometers long. Tai O () is a fishing town, partly located on an island of the same name, on the western side of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The village name means ''large inlet'', referring to wiktionary:outlet, outlet for the waterways (Tai O Creek and Tai O River) merges as it moves through Tai O. Hong Kong Buddhist Association ( zh, t=香港佛教聯合會, j=hoeng1 gong2 fat6 gaau3 lyun4 hap6 wui2) is a Buddhist umbrella organisation in Hong Kong which was founded in 1945. Po Lin Monastery
Po Lin Monastery is a Buddhist monastery, located on Ngong Ping Plateau, on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The monastery was founded in 1906 by three monks visiting from Jiangsu Province on the Chinese mainland and was initially known simply as "The Big Hut" ( zh, t=大茅蓬, j=daai6 maau4 pung4). It was renamed to its present name in 1924. The main temple houses three bronze statues of the Buddha – representing his past, present and future lives – as well as many Buddhist scriptures. Tian Tan Buddha, a giant Buddha statue completed in 1993, is an extension of the monastery. The Ngong Ping 360, consisting of the Ngong Ping village and a gondola lift running between Tung Chung (東涌) and Ngong Ping (昂坪), was built near to the Po Lin Monastery. Direct Subsidy Scheme
The Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) is instituted by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong to enhance the quality of private schools at the primary and secondary levels. The Hong Kong government has been encouraging non-government secondary schools which have attained a sufficiently high educational standard to join the DSS by Charter school, providing subsidies to enhance the quality of private school education since the 1991–92 school year. In the 2000–01 school year, the DSS was extended to primary schools. In the 2001–02 school year, the terms of the DSS were significantly improved to attract more schools to join the scheme. Under the scheme, schools are free to decide on their curriculum, fees, and entrance requirements. Standard Non-government schools must satisfy stipulated standards to be eligible to join the scheme.
