Buck Mountain (Pennsylvania)
Buck Mountain (also known as Bucks Mountain) is a mountain in Columbia County and Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Its elevation is above sea level. The mountain contains deposits of coal (specifically anthracite). Shale and conglomerate are also present. The coal on the mountain was historically mined, altering the landscape somewhat. The mountain is used by many species as a habitat. It is most likely named after Albert Ansbach. Geography Buck Mountain has an official elevation of , making it the fourth-highest mountain in Columbia County. Buck Mountain's official coordinates are in the United States Geological Survey quadrangle of Nuremberg. The mountain is located in southeastern Beaver Township, Columbia County. A summit is a point on a surface that is higher in elevation than all points immediately adjacent to it. The topographic terms acme, apex, peak (mountain peak), and zenith are synonymous. The term (mountain top) is generally used only for a mountain peak that is located at some distance from the nearest point of higher elevation. For example, a big, massive rock next to the main summit of a mountain is not considered a summit. Summits near a higher peak, with some prominence or isolation, but not reaching a certain cutoff value for the quantities, are often considered ''subsummits'' (or ''subpeaks'') of the higher peak, and are considered part of the same mountain.
