Bryncethin RFC
Bryncethin Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Bryncethin, South Wales. Formed in 1890, the club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and presently play in the WRU Division Five South Central. Club history Formed in 1890, Bryncethin quickly achieved WRU membership and by the turn of the century were represented in club competitions. In 1903 the club reached the final of a South Wales Cup, losing to a far more well established club, Llwynypia RFC. After the First World War, the club played at Pandy Park, under the promotion of a group of local businessmen. In 1924 the club was represented at an international level for the first time, when Ivor Thomas was selected to play for Wales against England in the Five Nations Championship. Bryncethin
Bryncethin (which means dark hill or dun hill) is a small village and electoral ward in the County Borough of Bridgend, South Wales, located just north of Junction 36 of the M4 Motorway and approximately 3 miles north of the county town of Bridgend. The population of the ward was 1,319 in 2011. Bryncethin is surrounded by the villages of Aberkenfig, Sarn, Bridgend, Sarn, Tondu, Ynysawdre, and Abergarw, Brynmenyn the last of which stands at the confluence of the River Garw (Afon Garw) with the larger River Ogmore (Ogmore River). WRU Division Five South Central
The Welsh Rugby Union Division Five South Central (also called the SWALEC Division Five South Central for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby union league in Wales first implemented for the 1995/96 season. Competition format and sponsorship Competition There are 11 clubs in the WRU Division Five South Central. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 20 games for each club, with a total of 110 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus point is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. No points are awarded for a loss though the losing team can gain a bonus point for finishing the match within seven points of the winning team. Llwynypia RFC was a rugby union club located in the Wales, Welsh village of Llwynypia in the Rhondda. The team provided several international players during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most notably Willie Llewellyn, who was not only selected to represent Wales national rugby union team, Wales while playing at the club, but later played for the British and Irish Lions, British Isles on their 1904 tour of Australia and New Zealand. The 1924 Five Nations Championship was the tenth series of the rugby union Five Nations Championship following the inclusion of France into the Home Nations Championship. Including the previous Home Nations Championships, this was the thirty-seventh series of the annual northern hemisphere rugby union championship. Ten matches were played between 1 January and 27 March. It was contested by England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Carston Catcheside, the England winger, became the first player to score a try against each other team in the five nations. Bridgend Ravens () (formerly Bridgend RFC) are a semi-professional rugby union club based in Bridgend, South Wales. They currently play in Super Rygbi Cymru and are a feeder club to the Ospreys regional team. Origin Bridgend RFC first formed a team in 1878, playing and losing to Newport RFC in the final of the South Wales Challenge Cup. However, the club was only established de facto after the first general meeting of the club was held at the York Hotel, Bridgend on 11 April 1880. Ivor Thomas (rugby Union)
Ivor Thomas (30 April 1900 – 12 May 1995) was a Welsh international rugby union player. Thomas hailed from the Garw Valley town of Pontyrhyl. A forward, Thomas played in Wales for Bridgend, Bryncethin and Pontycymmer. His only Wales cap however came while playing for Devon club Torquay Athletic. He featured in a 1924 Five Nations match against England at Swansea. Thomas retired as a player in 1934 and took up refereeing.
