Brychius Hungerfordi
Hungerford's crawling water beetle (''Brychius hungerfordi'') is a critically endangered member of the family (biology), family Haliplidae of water beetles found in northeastern North America. The US Fish and Wildlife Service Draft Recovery Plan for the species published in August 2004 estimates roughly 1000 individuals are present in the wild. In 2010, a five-year summary report by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service found the population to be essentially unchanged. The species was first discovered by entomology, entomologist Paul J. Spangler in 1954. Endangered status Hungerford's crawling water beetle was categorized as endangered on March 7, 1994, effective April 6, 1994, under the provisions of the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The Haliplidae are a family (biology), family of water beetles that swim using an alternating motion of the legs. They are therefore clumsy in water (compared e.g. with the Dytiscidae or Hydrophilidae), and prefer to get around by crawling. Prothorax
The prothorax is the foremost of the three segments in the thorax of an insect, and bears the first pair of legs. Its principal sclerites (exoskeletal plates) are the pronotum (dorsal), the prosternum ( ventral), and the propleuron (lateral) on each side. The prothorax never bears wings in extant insects (except in some cases of atavism), though some fossil groups possessed wing-like projections.
