Bruno Saura
Bruno Saura (born 5 August 1965) is a French anthropologist. Since the 1990s, he has been the author and regular contributor to numerous works on Polynesian culture. He is a professor of Polynesian civilization at the University of French Polynesia. His published works include a biography of Tahitian independence leader Pouvanaa a Oopa and a history of Rurutu. Saura was born in Metz, in the Moselle region of France. Polynesian culture is the culture of the indigenous peoples of Polynesia who share common traits in language, customs and society. The University of French Polynesia (french: Université de la Polynésie française) is a French university located in Puna'auia, French Polynesia. History Created by a decree of May 29, 1987, the university was originally called French Pacific University and was split between two sites, one located in New Caledonia (now University of New Caledonia) and the other in Tahiti. The administrative headquarters of the university was in Papeete. Both centers have become autonomous with the Decree No. 99-445 of 31 May 1999. Pouvanaa A Oopa
Pouvana'a a O'opa (May 10, 1895 – January 10, 1977) was a Tahitian politician and advocate for French Polynesian independence. He is viewed as the ''metua'' (father) of French Polynesia's independence movement. Pouvanaa served as a Deputy in the National Assembly of France from 1949 — 1958, when he was convicted on charges of arson and sentenced to eight years imprisonment and 15 years exile in France. After being pardoned in 1968, he served as a Senator from 1971 until his death in 1977. His conviction was quashed in 2018 after new evidence showed that French police had fabricated evidence or extracted it by threats of violence, and that the Governor had reported Pouvanaa's arrest before the fires had even been set.
