Bruce Keyter
Bruce M. Keyter is a South African professional golfer. Keyter won the Natal Open as an amateur in 1954. He turned professional soon after winning the 1955 South African Amateur Championship. He began his career as an assistant professional at Royal Durban Country Club. His first victory was at the 1956 Transvaal Open where he defeated South African legend Bobby Locke by a shot. It was a surprising victory; Australia's ''The Argus'' noted that it was Locke's first defeat in a big South African tournament in 20 years. Two months later, in April, Keyter was runner-up to Gary Player in the South African Open. A year later, in 1957, he won the Natal Open. In 1963 Keyter won what was arguably the biggest win of his career at the South African Masters, a triple crown event. Bobby Locke
Arthur D'Arcy "Bobby" Locke (20 November 1917 – 9 March 1987) was a South African professional golfer. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. He won The Open Championship four times and 15 PGA Tour events in total. In addition, he was a prolific tournament winner in South Africa, ultimately recording in 41 significant victories in his home country, including the South African Open nine times. Gary Player
Gary James Player DMS, OIG (born 1 November 1935) is a South African retired professional golfer who is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time. During his career, Player won nine major championships on the regular tour and nine major championships on the Champions Tour. At the age of 29, Player won the 1965 U.S. Open and became the only non-American to win all four majors in a career, known as the career Grand Slam. At the time, he was the youngest player to do this, though Jack Nicklaus (26) and Tiger Woods (24) subsequently broke this record. Player became only the third golfer in history to win the Career Grand Slam, following Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen, and only Nicklaus and Woods have performed the feat since. The South African Open is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world, having first been played in 1903, and is one of the principal tournaments on the Southern-Africa-based Sunshine Tour. Since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. History The first formal event was organised in 1903, following a series of exhibition matches that had been held over the preceding ten years. The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. Although non-whites had played in the South African Open before, most notably when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, it was not until 1972 that black golfers were allowed to compete. South African Masters
The South African Masters was one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. It was last played in 2011. Before its discontinuation, it had a prize fund of 1.2 million rand and was held at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club on the KwaZulu-Natal border, South Africa. The tournament had its roots in the South African Professional Match Play Championship, the running of which was taken over by the PGA of South Africa in 1957. Under the sponsorship of Dunlop the event transitioned into a 72-hole stroke play event in 1960. The first edition of the new Dunlop Masters, at Houghton Golf Club in 1960, was won by Gary Player with an aggregate score of 266, a record that stood for 44 years. Player's total was equalled in 1970 by John Fourie, the only amateur to claim the title. Terry Westbrook
Terrence E. Westbrook (born May 19, 1939) is a South African professional golfer. Early life Westbrook lost his left hand's middle finger and a large portion of his left thumb in a childhood accident. Despite this he managed to become a professional golfer. Professional career One of his earliest successes was at the 1963 Dunlop South African Masters where he finished joint runner-up, three behind Bruce Keyter. His first professional victories were at the Cock of the North tournament in Zambia. Westbrook won the event in 1966 and successfully defended the championship twice. His best years were in the early 1970s. In February 1970, Westbrook finished runner-up at the South African Open, the nation's most prestigious tournament, three behind England's Tommy Horton. Allan Henning
Allan Henning (born 1 June 1944) is a former professional golfer from South Africa. Henning was born into a golfing family. His brothers Harold, Brian, and Graham all became professional golfers. Henning turned professional in 1962 and won 18 tournaments on the South African Sunshine Tour between 1963 and 1980. His biggest win was the South African Open when it was played twice in 1963. Henning also had 4 playoff losses and 3 runner up positions in the South African Open. He also secured a big win at the South African Masters in 1968. Henning won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit in two consecutive seasons, in 1974/75 and 1975/76. He represented SA in World Cup and World Series of Golf. Henning was also the first to score a record 61 at the Toro Classic played at Glendower GC in 1976.
