Bruce Bugbee
Bruce Bugbee is an American scientist. His work includes research into space farming with NASA and at Utah State University, where he is the Director of the Crop Physiology Laboratory. Academic career Bugbee is the Director of the Crop Physiology Laboratory at Utah State University in their Plants, Soils & Climate Department. He is also the President of Apogee Instruments. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy in 2018. Bugbee has also provided TEDx Talks on his work, and has been awarded the Utah Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. Research Bruce Bugbee has studied recirculating hydroponics since the 1980s and has used the principles to create self-sustaining ecosystems. He has focused his study of hydroponics partially on use for long-term space missions. Hydroponics
Hydroponics is a type of horticulture and a subset of hydroculture which involves growing plants, usually crops or medicinal plants, without soil, by using water-based mineral nutrient solutions in aqueous solvents. Terrestrial or aquatic plants may grow with their roots exposed to the nutritious liquid or in addition, the roots may be mechanically supported by an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, or other substrates. Despite inert media, roots can cause changes of the rhizosphere pH and root exudates can affect rhizosphere biology and physiological balance of the nutrient solution by secondary metabolites. Transgenic plants grown hydroponically allow the release of pharmaceutical proteins as part of the root exudate into the hydroponic medium. LED Lights
An LED lamp or LED light bulb is an electric light that produces light using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED lamps are significantly more energy-efficient than equivalent incandescent lamps and can be significantly more efficient than most fluorescent lamps. The most efficient commercially available LED lamps have efficiencies of 200 lumen per watt (Lm/W). Commercial LED lamps have a lifespan many times longer than incandescent lamps. LED lamps require an electronic LED driver circuit to operate from mains power lines, and losses from this circuit means that the efficiency of the lamp is lower than the efficiency of the LED chips it uses. Crockett House (Logan, Utah)
The Crockett House, at 82 Crockett Ave. in Logan, Utah, was built in 1887. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. It is a Gothic Revival-style house with hand-carved gables and a large front porch. It was built by craftsmen for Alvin D. Crockett. Alvin Crockett (1831-1902) served for two terms as mayor of Logan, and served as Cache County sheriff for 15 years. He had 18 children with two wives. The house was bought by Utah State University professor Bruce Bugbee in 1981, who renovated the house and applied for, and received, National Register recognition.
