Browning Pond
Browning Pond is located in Oakham and Spencer, Massachusetts. This great pond forms the headwaters of the Seven Mile River. It is part of the Chicopee River Watershed. Information A boat ramp is located at the southwest corner of the pond, along Browning Pond Road. In March 2025, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Fish and Game, Office of Fishing and Boating access, acquired about 12 acres of land including the boat ramp and announced plans to improve public access to the pond. Other lands adjacent to the pond are privately owned. The water is dark colored, but has a moderately high transparency of . Aquatic vegetation and fallen trees provide cover and are scattered along the shoreline and in the northern cove. There is an old abandoned mine shaft that was used for mining copper. Oakham, Massachusetts
Oakham is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2020 census. History Oakham was first settled by British colonists in 1749 as part of Rutland, and was officially incorporated in 1762. It was originally named Oakhampton, but the name was changed for an unknown reason. The village of Coldbrook Springs was a part of Oakham, near the Barre line, established on the site of a natural iron spring. A railroad depot was built in nearby in the 1830s and the village eventually included a hotel, tavern, medicinal spa, and a number of houses. The area is part of the Ware River Watershed and now part of the Massachusetts state forest, having been cleared of all structures as a part of the Quabbin Reservoir Aqueduct system. Paxton, Massachusetts
Paxton is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,004 at the 2020 census. History Paxton was first settled by Europeans in 1749 and was officially incorporated in 1765. It was previously occupied by the Nipmuc tribe. The district of Paxton was originally taken from the towns of Leicester and Rutland, in nearly equal parts, and was incorporated February 12, 1765. Charles Paxton, marshal of the Admiralty Court, offered a church bell to the town if it was named after him; no such gift was ever made. The inhabitants soon commenced their plan for building a meeting house, and on the first day of April 1765, the town voted to build it. It was raised on June 18, 1766, and this is the frame of the present meeting house.
