Browne is a variant of the English surname Brown, meaning "brown-haired" or "brown-skinned". It may sometimes be derived from French ''le Brun'' with similar meaning. The ''Mac an Bhreitheamhnaigh'' clan of County Donegal have anglicized as Browne since about 1800. Anucha Browne is an American former women's basketball player and a former executive for the New York Knicks team of the NBA. She is also known for winning a sexual harassment lawsuit that she filed against the former New York Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas and Madison Square Garden. Playing career In 1982, Browne enrolled at Northwestern, where she was a star on the school's women's basketball team. Sanders was selected to the all-Big Ten team three times, and was named Big Ten Player of the Year twice; she also holds the all-time conference records for scoring (2,307 points) and rebounds (951), and in 1985 led all Division I women's basketball players nationwide in scoring average with 30.5 points per game. Christopher Kelly Browne (May 16, 1952 – February 5, 2023) was an American comic strip artist and cartoonist. He was the son of cartoonist Dik Browne and brother of cartoonist Chance Browne. From 1989 to 2023, Browne wrote and drew the comic strip ''Hägar the Horrible'', which is distributed by King Features Syndicate. Robert David "Chance" Browne (June 17, 1948 – March 1, 2024) was an American comic strip artist and cartoonist, painter, and musician. He was born in New York City. After his father Dik Browne died in 1989, Browne took over drawing the family comic strip ''Hi and Lois''. The comic is syndicated throughout the United States and stars the characters Hi, Lois, Dot, Ditto, Chip, and Trixie. ''Hi and Lois'' is syndicated by King Features, as is the other Browne family comic strip ''Hägar the Horrible'' (which was done by Chance's brother Chris Browne, Chris). Carolyn Browne (born 19 October 1958) is a British diplomat who was the British Ambassador to Kazakhstan from 2013 to 2018. Byron Ellis Browne (born December 27, 1942) is an American former professional baseball outfielder, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies, between and . He attended Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. Browne was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent, on September 9, 1962, then was drafted by the Cubs from the Pirates in the 1963 first-year draft. He made his Major League debut for the Cubs on September 9, 1965. Bud Browne (July 12, 1912 – July 25, 2008) was an American early pioneer surf film maker. He was the first filmmaker to show surf movies commercially. Browne was captain of the swim team at the University of Southern California in 1933. He learned to surf during his time in Venice, California. He began filming surfing in the 1940s while visiting Hawaii. Early life Bud Browne was born in Newtonville, Massachusetts on July 14, 1912 and died in San Luis Obispo, California on July 25, 2008. He moved to Los Angeles in 1931 and attended the University of Southern California, competing in collegiate swimming and became the captain of the team. Belmore Browne (1880 – May 2, 1954) was an American artist and explorer. He was known for his painted dioramas in natural history museums. Early life Belmore Browne was born in 1880 in Tompkinsville, New York, to Ella Haskell and George Browne Jr. His father was a lieutenant colonel in the American Civil War.
