Brownout (electricity)
A brownout is a drop in voltage in an electrical power supply system. Unintentional brownouts can be caused by excessive electricity demand, severe weather events, or a malfunction or error affecting electrical grid control or monitoring systems. Intentional brownouts are used for load reduction in an emergency, or to prevent a total grid power outage due to high demand. The term ''brownout'' comes from the dimming of incandescent lighting when voltage reduces. In some countries, the term ''brownout'' refers not to a drop in voltage but to an intentional or unintentional power outage (or blackout). Effects Different types of electrical apparatus will react in different ways to a voltage reduction. Some devices will be severely affected, while others may not be affected at all. Resistive loads The heat output of any resistive device, such as an electric space heater, is equal to the power consumption, which is directly proportional to the square of the applied volta ...

Brownout (software Engineering)
Brownout in software engineering is a technique that involves disabling certain features of an application. Description Brownout is used to increase the robustness of an application to computing capacity shortage. If too many users are simultaneously accessing an application hosted online, the underlying computing infrastructure may become overloaded, rendering the application unresponsive. Users are likely to abandon the application and switch to competing alternatives, hence incurring long-term revenue loss. To better deal with such a situation, the application can be given brownout capabilities: The application will disable certain features – e.g., an online shop will no longer display recommendations of related products – to avoid overload. Although reducing features generally has a negative impact on the short-term revenue of the application owner, long-term revenue loss can be avoided. The technique is inspired by brownouts in power grids, which consists in reducing ...

Brownout (aeronautics)
In aviation, a brownout (or brown-out) is an in-flight visibility restriction due to dust or sand in the air. In a brownout, the pilot cannot see nearby objects which provide the outside visual references necessary to control the aircraft near the ground. This can cause spatial disorientation and loss of situational awareness leading to an accident. Pilots have compared landing during brownouts to parallel parking an automobile with one's eyes closed. Description The brownout phenomenon causes accidents during helicopter landing and take-off operations in arid desert terrain. Intense, blinding dust clouds stirred up by the helicopter rotor downwash during near-ground flight causes significant flight safety risks from aircraft and ground obstacle collisions, and dynamic rollover due to sloped and uneven terrain. Brownouts have claimed more helicopters in recent military operations than all other threats combined (as of 2005). There are several factors which affect the probabil ...

Brownout (band)
Brownout is an American Latin-funk band from Austin, Texas. The band was originally formed as a side project of the members of the Grammy-award-winning band Grupo Fantasma. Though the band was formed in 2003, as Grupo Fantasma took off in the early 2000s, Brownout was left "on the backburner", and the band's first album, ''Homenaje'', wasn't released until 2008. Since then, the band has toured regularly across the United States, at events including Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, and Utopia Festival. Brownout has also served as a backing band for artists including Prince, Daniel Johnston, GZA and Bernie Worrell. In 2014, the group released a series of covers of the British band Black Sabbath under the moniker "Brown Sabbath", which received praise from Black Sabbath lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, as well as critical acclaim from NPR, AllMusic and ''Rolling Stone''. In 2018, Brownout released an instrumental cover album of Public Enemy songs titled ''Fear of a Brown Pl ...

Greyout
A greyout is a transient loss of vision characterized by a perceived dimming of light and color, sometimes accompanied by a loss of peripheral vision. It is a precursor to fainting or a blackout and is caused by hypoxia (low brain oxygen level), often due to a loss of blood pressure. Greyouts have a variety of possible causes: * Shock, such as hypovolemia, even in mild form such as when drawing blood. * Standing up suddenly (see orthostatic hypotension), especially if sick, hungover, or experiencing low blood pressure. * Fatigue * Hyperventilation, paradoxically: self-induced hypocapnia, such as in the fainting game or in shallow water blackout. * Overexertion * Panic attack Recovery is usually rapid. A greyout can be readily reversed by lying down as the cardiovascular system does not need to work against gravity for blood to reach the brain. A greyout may be experienced by aircraft pilots pulling high positive g-forces as when pulling up into a loop or a tight turn, which ...

Redout
A redout occurs when the body experiences a negative g-force sufficient to cause a blood flow from the lower parts of the body to the head. It is the inverse effect of a greyout, where blood flows away from the head to the lower parts of the body. Usually, a redout will only ever be experienced by pilots, as planes are the most common devices that allow such negative g-forces to be exerted. Redouts are potentially dangerous and can cause retinal damage and hemorrhagic stroke. According to the predominant theory, the redness appearing in the visual field is not caused by an actual blood flow to the eye, but it is most likely caused by the blood-laden lower eyelid coming into the visual field because of the pull of negative-Gs. See also * Greyout *Fainting *Presyncope Lightheadedness is a common and typically unpleasant sensation of dizziness or a feeling that one may faint. The sensation of lightheadedness can be short-lived, prolonged, or, rarely, recurring. In addition to ...
