Brovary
Brovary (, ; ) is a List of cities in Ukraine, city in Kyiv Oblast, northern Ukraine, situated to the east of the capital Kyiv and part of the Kyiv metropolitan area. It serves as the administrative centre of Brovary Raion. Brovary hosts the administration of Brovary urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. In 2024, about 100,000 people live in the city. History Early history Brovary is a historic town, first mentioned in 1630. At the time there were only 60 or 70 houses in Brovary, but in 1649 a Cossack sotnia is known to have been formed there. Cossacks took part in the Khmelnytsky Uprising under Bohdan Khmelnytsky's leadership. Originally, the town was called Brovari (), but the name was changed in 1969 to make it Russification of Ukraine, more similar to Russian. The name, translated from Ukrainian, means 'breweries' (and is a loanword from Dutch language, Dutch). The town got its name after breweries where special beer was made. Brovary Raion
Brovary Raion () is a raion (district) in Kyiv Oblast of Ukraine. Its capital (political), administrative center is the town of Brovary. Its population is History In 1923, Brovary Raion was established with its center in Brovary. In 1930, the raion was reworked, with its center moved to Velyka Dymerka. In 1937, this change was undone, and the center was moved back to Brovary. Brovary was designated a city of regional significance (Ukraine), city of oblast significance in 1972 - meaning that while Brovary still served as the administrative center of Brovary Raion, it was no longer subordinated to it, instead being directly subordinated to the government of Kyiv Oblast. Kyiv Oblast (, ), also called Kyivshchyna (, ), is an Administrative divisions of Ukraine, oblast (province) in central and northern Ukraine. Velyka Dymerka () is a rural settlement in Brovary Raion (district) of Kyiv Oblast (province) in northern Ukraine. Velyka Dymerka hosts the administration of Velyka Dymerka settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. The settlement is one of the largest localities in Brovary Raion, with a permanent population of 10,074 as of the 2001 Ukrainian Census. The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine () is the ministry of the Ukrainian government that oversees national defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The head of the ministry is the Minister of Defence. ''The History of Cities and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR'' () is a Ukrainian encyclopedia, published in 26 volumes. It provides knowledge about the history of all populated places in Ukraine. It was approved by the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1962 and published for the first time the very same year. The chief editor was the noted scholar and historian Petro Tronko. This is the first thorough historical work of its kind. Each volume covered the history of all populated places in different regions of Ukraine, and at that time they numbered almost 40,000. The encyclopedia played an important role in collecting materials for writing essays about the villages.
