Homewood, Alabama
Homewood is a city in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham, located on the other side of Red Mountain due south of the city center. The population was 26,414 at the 2020 census. History Early history and development In 1800, the first settlers arrived in the area that is now known as Homewood. However, the area's population would not grow significantly until a cholera epidemic ravaged the city of Birmingham in 1873, an issue only made worse by the financial crisis brought on by the Panic of 1873. Seeking new beginnings and safer living spaces, many Birmingham residents began moving out of the city, buying up land and developing communities in the surrounding areas. Brookwood is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. It incorporated in September 1977. As of the 2020 census, the population of the town is 2,504. History 2001 mine disaster On September 23, 2001, two separate explosions occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. in 4 Section of the Jim Walter Resources Blue Creek No. 5 mine, resulting in fatal injuries to thirteen miners. At the time of the explosions, thirty-two miners were underground during a non-producing Sunday afternoon shift. Ten of those killed refused to evacuate, instead staying behind in an attempt to rescue several who were trapped after the first explosion. Brookwood, Surrey
Brookwood is a village in Surrey, England, about west of Woking, with a mixture of semi-rural, woodland-set and archetypal suburban residential homes. It lies on the western border of the Woking Borough, with a small part of the village in Guildford Borough. As part of the 2016 boundary review, Brookwood became part of the Heathlands ward which comprises Brookwood, Bridley, Hook Heath, Mayford, Sutton Green and Barnsbury and Wych Hill. The village is known for the 500-acre Brookwood Cemetery, also called the London Necropolis. The village also gave its name to the former Victorian Brookwood Hospital, once the leading mental institution in Surrey. Since its closure in 1994, it has been redeveloped as housing. Brookwood Cemetery, also known as the London Necropolis, is a burial ground in Brookwood, Surrey, England. It is the largest cemetery in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in Europe. Brookwood Hospital
Brookwood Hospital at Knaphill (near Woking) in Surrey, was established in 1867 by Surrey Quarter Sessions as the second County Asylum, the first being Springfield Asylum in Tooting (1840). A third asylum, Cane Hill Hospital at Coulsdon in the eastern part of the county, followed in 1882. History The facility, which was designed by Charles Henry Howell, the principal asylum architect in England and architect to the Lunacy Commissioners and county surveyor for Surrey from 1860–1893, was opened as the Brookwood Asylum on 17 June 1867. It was the leading mental hospital for the western half of Surrey, occupying a large site at Knaphill, near Brookwood. Brookwood Hills is a historic neighborhood located in intown Atlanta, Georgia, United States, north of Midtown and south-southwest of Buckhead. The Hillsboro School District 1J is a unified school district located in Hillsboro, Oregon, United States. The district operates 26 elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools. Brookwood High School is a public secondary school in Snellville, Georgia, in suburban Atlanta, part of the Gwinnett County School System. Brookwood serves several areas of southern Gwinnett County, including Snellville, Lawrenceville, and Lilburn. History Planning for Brookwood High School was started in 1977 to lessen the overcrowding of nearby South Gwinnett High School and Parkview High School. A committee of educators from Gwinnett County met to create and discuss specifications for the facility. The school officially opened in 1981 under principal Emmett Lawson. The school derived its name from its location on the intersection of Holly Brook Road (a section of this road is now Webb Gin House Road) and Dogwood Road.
