Bronwyn Halfpenny
Bronwyn Halfpenny (born 30 July 1963) is an Australian politician, and has been the member for Electoral district of Thomastown, Thomastown in the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2010. She is the daughter of the well-known trade union leader John Halfpenny and grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Watsonia, Victoria, Watsonia. She was educated at Watsonia Primary School, Greensborough College, Watsonia High School and La Trobe University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Economics. Prior to her election to the Victorian state parliament, Halfpenny was the secretary of the Food and Confectionery Division of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union from 1999 to 2006, and Industrial Campaigns Officer of the Victorian Trades Hall Council from 2006 to 2010. She lives in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and has two children. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is a representative body of trade union organisations, known as a labour council, in the state of Victoria, Australia. It comprises 43 affiliated trade unions and professional associations, and eight regional Trades and Labour Councils of Victoria. The eight regional Trades and Labour Councils are Ballarat Regional Trades & Labour Council, Bendigo Trades Hall Council, Geelong Trades Hall Council, Gippsland Trades & Labour Council Inc., Goulburn Valley Trades & Labour Council, Sunraysia Trades & Labour Council Inc., North-East Border Trades & Labour Council and South-West Trades & Labour Council. Electoral District Of Thomastown
The electoral district of Thomastown is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It currently includes the suburbs of Lalor and Thomastown, and parts of Fawkner, Reservoir and Wollert, and has been in existence since 1985. The seat is extremely safe for the Labor Party. At the 2002 election, Labor frontbencher Peter Batchelor won the seat with over 80% of the two-party-preferred vote, making Thomastown the safest seat in the state. The seat's first member, Beth Gleeson, died whilst in office in December 1989. The resulting February 1990 by-election, held when support for Labor had plummeted as a result of an economic crisis, was nearly won by the Australian Democrats.
