Bromford Tunnel
The Bromford tunnel is a high-speed railway tunnel under construction in North Warwickshire and Birmingham, England, and will serve to bring the High Speed 2 rail line into Birmingham upon completion. The twin-bore tunnels will be situated between Water Orton and Washwood Heath. History The contract to build the tunnel, as part of the wider N1 and N2 lots on the HS2 programme, was awarded to the Balfour Beatty Vinci JV on 1 April 2020, valued at c.£5 billion. This followed them being named by HS2 as part of the intention to award in July 2017. The route was initially envisioned in the High Speed Rail (London - West Midlands) Act 2017 to be a tunnel, long (in Work No. 3/203) and partly on viaduct, less than , in length (in Work No. 3/157). High Speed 2
High Speed 2 (HS2) is a high-speed railway which has been under construction in England since 2019. The line's planned route is between Handsacre – in southern Staffordshire – and London, with a Spur line, branch to Birmingham. HS2 is to be Britain's second purpose-built High-speed rail in the United Kingdom, high-speed railway (after High Speed 1, the London to Channel Tunnel link). London and Birmingham are to be served directly by new high-speed track. Services to Glasgow, Liverpool, and Manchester are to use a mix of new high-speed track and the existing West Coast Main Line. Mercia Mudstone Group
The Mercia Mudstone Group is an early Triassic lithostratigraphy, lithostratigraphic group (stratigraphy), group (a sequence of rock strata) which is widespread in Britain, especially in the English Midlands—the name is derived from the ancient kingdom of Mercia which corresponds to that area. It is frequently encountered in older literature as the Keuper Marl or Keuper Marl Series. The Mercia Mudstone Group is now divided into five formations recognised and mappable across its entire outcrop and subcrop. The formations are a mix of mudstones, siltstones, sandstones and halites. Historically this sequence of rocks has been subdivided in different ways with different names in each of the basinal areas in which it is found. Castle Vale is a housing estate located between Erdington, Minworth and Castle Bromwich. Currently Castle Vale makes up the Castle Vale Ward of Birmingham City Council which is part of Erdington constituency (having previously been part of Hodge Hill constituency until recent times), northeast of Birmingham city centre in England. The area has an approximate population of 10,000 people and has a distinctly modern residential character stemming from its history as a postwar overspill estate. The area was originally known as Berwood, from the Saxon 'Bearu' meaning 'the woods'. Tunnel Boom
Piston effect refers to the forced-air flow inside a tunnel or shaft caused by moving vehicles. It is one of numerous phenomena that engineers and designers must consider when developing a range of structures. Cause In open air, when a vehicle travels along, air pushed aside can move in any direction except into the ground. Inside a tunnel, air is confined by the tunnel walls to move along the tunnel. Behind the moving vehicle, as air has been pushed away, suction is created, and air is pulled to flow into the tunnel. In addition, because of fluid viscosity, the surface of the vehicle drags the air to flow with vehicle, a force experienced as skin drag by the vehicle. This movement of air by the vehicle is analogous to the operation of a mechanical piston as inside a reciprocating compressor gas pump, hence the name "piston effect".
