Broadway Impact
Broadway Impact is a 501(c)3 charity fighting for marriage equality in the United States. It is the only grassroots organization to mobilize the theater community nationwide in support of marriage equality. Their mission statement reads: "Whether you're gay, straight, or somewhere in between, we believe that you should be able to marry the person you love." Broadway Impact was founded in 2009 by Tony-winner Gavin Creel, Tony-nominated Rory O'Malley, and Jenny Kanelos. Events & Activism It produced a 3,000-piece letter writing campaign in support of the Marriage Equality Act (New York). In 2009, held a rally in midtown featuring speeches and/or performances from Cheyenne Jackson, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Audra McDonald, David Hyde Pierce, then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York State Senator Tom Duane, and State Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell. Rory O'Malley
Rory James O'Malley (born December 23, 1980) is an American actor, best known for his Tony Award-nominated performance as Elder McKinley in ''The Book of Mormon''. He is a co-founder of the gay rights activist group Broadway Impact. Early life O'Malley was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was brought up by his single mother, who is of Irish ancestry. He grew up Catholic. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio and Carnegie Mellon University. O'Malley became friends with actors Josh Gad and Leslie Odom Jr. at Carnegie Mellon University and remains good friends with them. Same-sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage, also known as gay marriage, is the marriage of two people of the same sex or gender. marriage between same-sex couples is legally performed and recognized in 33 countries, with the most recent being Mexico, constituting some 1.35 billion people (17% of the world's population). In Andorra, a law allowing same-sex marriage will come into force on 17 February 2023. Adoption rights are not necessarily covered, though most states with same-sex marriage allow those couples to jointly adopt as other married couples can. In contrast, 34 countries (as of 2021) have definitions of marriage in their constitutions that prevent marriage between couples of the same sex, most enacted in recent decades as a preventative measure. Hunter Bell
Hunter Houston Bell is an American writer and theatre actor. Early life and education Bell was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and was raised in Wilson, North Carolina until the seventh grade, when he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Hunter earned a B.F.A in theatre from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. Career Bell began his career with smaller regional theater productions. Richard Socarides is head of global corporate communications and government affairs for Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG). ''La Cage aux Folles'' () is a musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, it tells the story of a gay couple, Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his romantic partner and star attraction, and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges's son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents to meet them. ''La cage aux folles'' literally means "the cage of crazy women". However, ''folles'' is also a slang term for effeminate homosexuals (queens). '' itle of show' is a one-act musical, with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and a book by Hunter Bell. The show chronicles its own creation as an entry in the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and follows the struggles of the author and composer/lyricist and their two actress friends during the initial brief (three-week) creative period, along with subsequent events leading up to the show's production. '' itle of show' was chosen for production by the Musical Theatre Festival and premiered there, in September 2004, in New York City. National Equality March
The National Equality March was a national political rally that occurred October 11, 2009 in Washington, D.C. It called for equal protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The march was called for by activist David Mixner and implemented by Cleve Jones, and organized by Equality Across America and the Courage Campaign. Kip Williams and Robin McGehee served as co-directors. Leaders like actress Michelle Clunie, Courage Campaign marketing director, Billy Pollina and New York gubernatorial aide Peter Yacobellis hosted the first fundraiser in the spring of 2009. 2008 California Proposition 8
Proposition 8, known informally as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment intended to ban same-sex marriage; it passed in the November 2008 California state elections and was later overturned in court. The proposition was created by opponents of same-sex marriage in advance of the California Supreme Court's May 2008 appeal ruling, '' In re Marriage Cases'', which followed the short-lived 2004 same-sex weddings controversy and found the previous ban on same-sex marriage ( Proposition 22, 2000) unconstitutional.
