BRMB
BRMB is a British radio station based in Aston, Birmingham, which is owned and operated by Murfin Music International. It broadcasts on 89.1FM in Aston and surrounding areas, on DAB throughout Birmingham, and online via the station's website and mobile apps. Originally launched on 19 February 1974, BRMB was one of the first Independent Local Radio stations to go on air in the UK. It was acquired by Capital Radio in 1993, and subsequently sold to Orion Media in 2008. Orion announced a rebrand of BRMB and its sister stations to Free Radio in 2012, and the BRMB name disappeared in March 2012 when it became Free Radio Birmingham. On 17 August 2023, Ofcom gave approval for Big City Radio, a Birmingham based community station to relaunch as BRMB on 4 September 2023; Paul Young's " Come Back and Stay" was the first song to be played following the relaunch, and Jimmy Franks presented the first programme. Hits Radio Birmingham
Hits Radio Birmingham, formerly Free Radio Birmingham, is an Independent Local Radio station based in Birmingham, England, owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Birmingham and the West Midlands. As of September 2024, the station has a weekly audience of 217,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History The station was launched as BRMB on 19 February 1974, broadcasting on 261 metres medium wave, (1151kHz (moving in November 1978 to 1152kHz) and 94.8 MHz FM. BRMB was the fourth independent local commercial radio station to begin broadcasting in Britain after LBC, Capital London and Radio Clyde. Les Ross
Leslie Ross MBE (né Meakin; born 7 February 1949) is a British disc jockey in the West Midlands. He currently presents a radio programme on BRMB. Early life Born in Birmingham, Ross wanted to be a DJ writing to the general manager of Radio Luxembourg at age 11. He attended King Edward VI Aston School in Aston, Birmingham and left with 10 O Levels. His first job after school was at IBM, but he left after one year. His next job was as a clerk at Witton Cemetery. At age 17, Ross won a DJ competition run by the Birmingham Evening Mail, beating Johnnie Walker, who came in second. Part of his prize was to appear at Radio Luxembourg for an audition, but this never happened. Tony Butler (broadcaster)
Tony Butler (15 May 1935 – 14 July 2023) was a British sports broadcaster from Birmingham. He was one of the first stars of local radio in Britain, known for a distinctive local accent and sometimes controversial style. In 2007, he was honoured by the Sony Radio Academy with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Early career Tony Butler was born in Wolverhampton on 15 May 1935. He began his journalistic career in local papers in Birmingham before beginning to contribute to BBC national and regional radio in the 1960s. His strong regional accent caused problems at the staid BBC, and he later recalled how he was encouraged to soften his natural accent. At one point the BBC even provided elocution lessons. Big City Radio
Big City Radio (formerly Aston FM) is a British community radio station based in Aston, Birmingham. The station, owned and operated by Murfin Music International, broadcasts from Aston and surrounding areas, on DAB+ and online via the station's website and mobile apps. The station launched on 1 November 2005 as Aston FM, before rebranding as ''Big City'' four years later. In November 2017 Big City Radio changed its mainstream output from classic contemporary music to 'Urban' and 'Specialised' programming. In September 2022, the station began to tease a relaunch of the former Birmingham ILR brand BRMB on its website and social media. On 17 August 2023, it was announced that the UK's media regulator, Ofcom, had given Big City Radio approval to rebrand as BRMB. Elliott Webb
Elliott Webb (born 15 April 1971 in Worcester) is an English radio presenter. Early career Webb started his career in 1989 at Radio Wyvern in Worcester where he presented the evening show. From there he briefly presented the late night show at Severn Sound in Gloucester and then moved to MFM 103.4 to present evenings again. In 1991 he moved to Bradford to work at the newly re-launched Pulse of West Yorkshire. He hosted various shows until he took over presenting duties for Breakfast with co-host Debbie Lindley until his departure in 1996. Caroline Martin
Caroline Martin is a British radio presenter. She presents the weekend breakfast show on BBC Local Radio in the West of England, and a late-night show on some weekdays for the Wolverhampton radio station WCR FM. Early life Martin was born in Cambridge, England. She grew up near Cambridge. She was named after Radio Caroline, a radio station at which she would later work. Career Martin began to broadcast on Radio Caroline, a pirate radio station off the coast of the East of England, in May 1986. Martin was 17 or 18 when she was on the Ross Revenge ship of Radio Caroline when its crew were brought to safety during a storm. Free Radio was a regional group of Independent Local Radio stations in the West Midlands (region), West Midlands, owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK as part of the Hits Radio network. The Free Radio brand name was replaced by localised versions of Hits Radio on 17 April 2024. Overview Free Radio launched on Monday 26 March 2012 as a result of the rebranding of four FM stations – Hits Radio Birmingham, BRMB, Hits Radio Black Country & Shropshire, Beacon, Hits Radio Coventry & Warwickshire, Mercia and Hits Radio Herefordshire & Worcestershire, Wyvern. Graham Torrington
Graham Torrington (born 1960) is a British radio presenter and broadcaster. Radio work Romantica After starting out as a hospital radio presenter, Torrington joined Birmingham's BRMB in the 1980s to cover an overnight programme for Steve Dennis. He was with the station for several years during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and through most of his tenure there presented a late night programme of love songs called ''Romantica''. The show had previously been hosted by Charley Neal, who went on to become a weather presenter at Central Television. Torrington presented the programme on Saturdays for a while after Neal, but moved to host the station's lunchtime show in 1989, as well as a Sunday morning programme. Ed Doolan
Edwin Myer Doolan MBE (20 July 1941 – 16 January 2018) was an Australian born naturalised British radio presenter who was a veteran of Birmingham's first commercial radio station BRMB, and subsequently the BBC. At the BBC he presented a weekly show trawling through his broadcast archives from noon until 1 pm on BBC Radio WM on Sunday lunchtime. He was honoured by the British Radio Academy, earning a place in the Radio Hall of Fame. He was presented with Honorary Doctorates from Birmingham's three universities and was the first person to have ever achieved that honour. Jeremy Neil Kyle (born 7 July 1965) is an English broadcaster and writer. He is known for hosting the tabloid talk show '' The Jeremy Kyle Show'' on ITV from 2005 to 2019. He also hosted an American version of his eponymous show, which ran for two seasons beginning in 2011. Since 2022, Kyle has been a presenter for Talk. Independent Local Radio
Independent Local Radio is the collective name given to commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. As a result of the buyouts and mergers permitted by the Broadcasting Act 1990, and deregulation resulting from the Communications Act 2003, most commercial stations are now neither independent (although they remain independent from the BBC) nor local, as almost all of them are now relays of a national brand, with all remaining locality reduced to nothing more than a weekday regional programme and localised commercials, news, weather and peak-time travel information.
