British Swimming Championships (50 M) 2009
The British Gas Swimming Championships (50 m) 2009 were held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield from 16–20 March 2009. They also doubled as the first trials for the 2009 World Aquatics Championships. They were organised by British Swimming and sponsored by British Gas. Qualification for the World Championships team was automatic for swimmers finishing in first place in all Olympic events. An additional space on the team was identified from the 2009 Scottish Championships, 25–28 June 2009 in Glasgow. Ponds Forge International Sports Centre
Ponds Forge International Sports Centre is a leisure complex in Sheffield, England, that contains an Olympic-sized swimming pool with seating for 2,600 spectators, family and children's pools (50 m Competition pool and 25 m diving pit), water slides and other sports facilities. History Ponds Forge was opened in 1991 as a venue for the Summer Universiade, which the city hosted that year. In the 1994 UK Sports Design Awards Ponds Forge was highly commended in the overall category, and for the use of steel in its construction it won the British Steel Award. The name ''Ponds Forge'' is borrowed from the steel works that formerly occupied this site and a high anvil has been left in situ next to the building, partly because it would have been too expensive to move it. Michael Rock (swimmer)
Michael Paul Rock (born 13 March 1987) is a British butterfly stroke swimmer. He attended St. Edward's College, Liverpool, from 1998 to 2003. As of 2008 he is a student at The University of Manchester, and is studying law. Swimming career Rock competed in the 100 m and 200 m butterfly events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, after becoming British champion in both events at the 2008 British Olympic Swimming Trials in Sheffield. Lowri Tynan
Lowri Tynan (born 13 October 1987) is a Welsh swimmer, specialising in breaststroke at 50 and 100 metres. Early career Lowri was born in Wrexham. Her talent was first spotted by coach Keith Barrow at a pool in Wrexham. She was the Welsh record holder for 50 metres breaststroke by age 14. Lowri Tynan was educated at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham where she excelled at all sports. Kate Haywood
Kate Emma Haywood (born 1 April 1987) is an English former elite swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA world championships, and European championships, and represented England in the Commonwealth Games. She competed predominantly as a breaststroke swimmer. She was the youngest swimmer to represent England in the Commonwealth Games when she qualified for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where she won a bronze medal in the 4×100-metre medley relay. She retired from competitive swimming following the 2012 Summer Olympics. Elizabeth Clare Simmonds (born 22 January 1991) is an English competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain in the Olympics, FINA World Aquatics Championships, and European championships, and England in the Commonwealth Games. She specialises in backstroke events, and is a former European champion in the 200-metre backstroke. Simmonds represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in both the 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke swimming events. She also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 200-metre backstroke swimming event, coming in fourth place. Simmonds went to secondary school in Lincoln and trained with the Vulcans Swimming Club, later attending Loughborough University. Keri-anne Payne (born 9 December 1987), also known by her married name Keri-anne Carry, is a South African-born British swimmer, specialising in marathon open water swimming, and long-distance freestyle swimming in the pool. She is a two-time 10-kilometre open water world champion, and an Olympic silver medallist. Swimming career Payne was born on 9 December 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to British parents, who registered her birth at the British Consulate. She started swimming aged 4, and was noticed aged 8 by British Swimming's national performance director Bill Sweetenham at a training camp in South Africa. Rebecca Adlington
Rebecca Adlington (born 17 February 1989) is a British former competitive swimmer who specialised in freestyle events in international competition. She won two gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 400-metre freestyle and 800-metre freestyle, breaking the 19-year-old world record of Janet Evans in the 800-metre final. Adlington was Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, and the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908. Caitlin McClatchey (born 28 November 1985) is a British former swimmer. Representing Scotland, she won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, in the 200 metres freestyle and 400 metres freestyle. Representing Great Britain, she won bronze medals in the 400 m freestyle at the 2005 World Championships and 2006 European Championships. Francesca Jean Halsall (born 12 April 1990) is a retired English competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain at the Olympics, FINA world championships, and European championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. She competed primarily in freestyle and butterfly events. Halsall was the youngest member of the Team England swim squad at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she won silver medals in the 4×100-metre freestyle and 4×100-metre medley relays.
