British Satellite Broadcasting plc (BSB) was a television company, based in London, that provided satellite television, direct broadcast satellite television services to the United Kingdom. It started broadcasting on 25 March 1990. The company was merged with Sky Television (1984–1990), Sky Television plc on 2 November 1990 to form Sky UK, British Sky Broadcasting. Development In January 1977, the World Administrative Radio Conference assigned each country five high-powered satellite television, direct broadcast by satellite channels for domestic use. London Weekend Television
London Weekend Television (LWT; now part of the non-franchised ITV London region) was the ITV (TV network), ITV network franchise holder for Greater London and the Home Counties at weekends, broadcasting from Fridays at 5.15 pm (7:00 pm from 1968 until 1982) to Monday mornings at 6:00. From 1968 until 1992, when LWT's weekday counterpart was Thames Television, there was an on-screen handover to LWT on Friday nights (there was no handover back to Thames on Mondays, as from 1968 to 1982 there was no programming in the very early morning, and from 1983, when a national breakfast franchise was created, LWT would hand over to TV-am at 6:00am, which would then hand over to Thames at 9:25am). Carlton Communications plc was a British media company. It was led by Michael P. Green and listed on the London Stock Exchange from 1983 until 2 February 2004, when it was bought by Granada plc in a corporate takeover to form ITV plc. Carlton shareholders gained approximately 32% of ITV plc. Now (British TV Channel)
Now (referred to by some news outlets as The Now Channel) was a British television channel transmitted as part of the British Satellite Broadcasting service during 1990. The channel aired news and current affairs on weekdays and documentaries and arts programmes on weekends. History The Now channel was originally designed to be a live 24-hour news channel similar to CNN and Sky News, with its content provided by ITN. Between the awarding of the franchise and the launch of the channel, ITN withdrew its involvement with BSB after failing to reach an agreement on how to provide its news service and the Now channel's remit was changed to a mix of daytime lifestyle shows, current affairs programming, and arts programmes at weekends. Galaxy (British TV Channel)
Galaxy (referred to by some TV-focused websites as The Galaxy Channel) was a short-lived British satellite television channel, owned and operated by British Satellite Broadcasting. The station, focused on general entertainment and children's programming, was one of the five BSB channels, based at the network's headquarters at Marco Polo House in Battersea. Galaxy broadcast a mix of original programming, American imports and archive repeats from the BBC library. Its most infamous production was '' Heil Honey I'm Home'', a sitcom about Adolf Hitler, and Eva Braun living as a couple in America with their Jewish neighbors, which aired only its pilot episode. The Movie Channel was a British television service which only aired movies. Launched on British Satellite Broadcasting, The Movie Channel was a predecessor of some of the Sky Movies channels, having survived the 1990 merger with Sky Television, another satellite service launched by Rupert Murdoch's News International. History The Movie Channel was one of the five services of British Satellite Broadcasting, a consortium consisting of Granada Television, Pearson, Virgin, Anglia Television and Amstrad. Known as Screen during the bidding process, the channel launched as The Movie Channel on 25 March 1990. Amstrad plc was a British consumer electronics company, founded in 1968 by Alan Sugar. During the 1980s, the company was known for its Home computer, home computers beginning with the Amstrad CPC and later also the ZX Spectrum range after the Sinclair Research, Sinclair deal, which led it to have a substantial share of the home computer market in Britain. ITV Anglia, previously known as Anglia Television, is the ITV franchise holder for the East of England. The station is based at Anglia House in Norwich, with regional news bureaux in Cambridge and Northampton. The Children's Channel, also known as TCC, was a British-based pan-European children's television channel in Europe, Asia and Africa, which was owned by Flextech in London, England, UK. It began broadcasting on the original Eutelsat satellite on 1 September 1984. History Early years The Children's Channel was launched on the original Eutelsat satellite on 1 September 1984, almost exclusively to cable households owing to the low proliferation of domestic satellite dishes in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at that time.
