British Rail Class 555
The British Rail Class 555 ''METRO'' is a new class of electric multiple unit, manufactured by Swiss company Stadler Rail, that will enter into service in 2023 on the Tyne and Wear Metro. It will replace the original Tyne and Wear Metrocar rolling stock, which have been in use since 1980. To facilitate operation of the Class 555, a new Metro Fleet Depot in Gosforth has been built, and 40 of the 60 stations are having platform heights modified. Operator Nexus has consulted with both drivers and passengers on the fine details of cab and carriage interior design. Costing a total of £362million, the first of the 46 units are expected to enter into service in Autumn 2023. European Train Control System
The European Train Control System (ETCS) is the signalling and control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It is a replacement for legacy train protection systems and designed to replace the many incompatible safety systems currently used by European railways. The standard was also adopted outside Europe and is an option for worldwide application. In technical terms it is a type of positive train control (PTC). ETCS is implemented with standard trackside equipment and unified controlling equipment within the train cab. Four Lane Ends is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburbs of Benton and Longbenton, North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. Regenerative braking is an energy recovery mechanism that slows down a moving vehicle or object by converting its kinetic energy into a form that can be either used immediately or stored until needed. In this mechanism, the electric traction motor uses the vehicle's momentum to recover energy that would otherwise be lost to the brake discs as heat. Jacobs bogies (named after Wilhelm Jakobs,, 1858–1942, a German mechanical railway engineer) are a type of rail vehicle bogie commonly found on articulated railcars and tramway vehicles. Instead of being underneath a piece of rolling stock, Jacobs bogies are placed between two carriages. The weight of each carriage is spread across the Jacobs bogie. ''Today's Railways UK'' is an English-based monthly magazine covering rail transport in Great Britain. It was founded by Platform 5 in January 2002 as ''Entrain'' as a sister publication to '' Today's Railways Europe'', in January 2006 it was rebranded as ''Today's Railways UK''. The magazine was set up by Peter Fox, who wrote a monthly "Grumpy Old Man" Column. It is owned by Platform 5 publications. Fox was editor-in-chief of the magazine until his death in 2011.
