British Rail Class 197
The British Rail Class 197 is a class of diesel multiple unit passenger train built by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, CAF, based on its ''CAF Civity, Civity'' platform. They are operated by Transport for Wales Rail (TfW), split into 51 two-car units and 26 three-car units. Seventy-seven Class 197 sets were ordered in 2018 under the franchise obligations made by KeolisAmey Wales, the then-operator of the Wales & Borders franchise. They are based on the units that were being received by Arriva Rail North at that time, albeit with various customisations to suit the specification and preferences of KeolisAmey and TfW. ''Today's Railways UK'' is an English-based monthly magazine covering rail transport in Great Britain. It was founded by Platform 5 in January 2002 as ''Entrain'' as a sister publication to '' Today's Railways Europe'', in January 2006 it was rebranded as ''Today's Railways UK''. The magazine was set up by Peter Fox, who wrote a monthly "Grumpy Old Man" Column. It is owned by Platform 5 publications. Fox was editor-in-chief of the magazine until his death in 2011. Robin Sisson, the rail campaigner, worked for Today's Railways UK as assistant editor, under editor-in-chief Peter Fox, from 2006 until his death in 2008. Ebbw Valley Railway
The Ebbw Valley Railway () is a branch line of the South Wales Main Line in South Wales. Transport for Wales Rail provides an hourly passenger service each way between Ebbw Vale Town railway station, Ebbw Vale Town and Cardiff Central railway station, Cardiff Central, and an hourly service each way between Ebbw Vale Town and Newport railway station, Newport. The line was opened by the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company and the Great Western Railway, Great Western Railway (GWR) operated a passenger service from the 1850s between Newport, Wales, Newport and Ebbw Vale. The Maesteg Line is a commuter rail line in South Wales from Bridgend to Maesteg. Services usually operate hourly from Maesteg to via , using the South Wales Main Line, followed by the Ebbw Valley Railway. Electrification by 2019 was announced in the Department for Transport's High Level Output Specification of 2012, but later cancelled. Train Protection & Warning System
The Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) is a train protection system used throughout the British passenger main-line railway network, and in Victoria, Australia. According to the UK Rail Safety and Standards Board, the purpose of TPWS is to stop a train by automatically initiating a brake demand, where TPWS track equipment is fitted, if the train has: passed a signal at danger without authority; approached a signal at danger too fast; approached a reduction in permissible speed too fast; approached buffer stops too fast. TPWS is not designed to prevent signals passed at danger (SPADs) but to mitigate the consequences of a SPAD, by preventing a train that has had a SPAD from reaching a conflict point after the signal.
