British Bankers Association
The British Bankers' Association (BBA) was a trade association for the UK banking and financial services sector. From 1 July 2017, it was merged into UK Finance. It represented members from a wide range of banking and financial services. The association lobbied for its members and gave its view on the legislative and regulatory system for banking in the UK. History The BBA was founded in 1919 by the merger of two pre-existing bodies, the Central Association of Bankers (est. 1895 in London, 34 St Clements Lane) and the Association of English Country Bankers (est. 1874 and itself one of the Central Association's founders). Until 1972, the BBA was only open to British domestic, colonial and dominion banks. In 1972, it opened itself to all banks operating in the United Kingdom. UK Finance is a British trade association for the UK banking and financial services sector that was formed on 1 July 2017. It represents over 300 firms in the UK providing credit, banking, markets and payment-related services. The association formulates policy for its members, advocates those policies with the Government of the United Kingdom, regulators and the media, and supports industry collaboration in the interests of efficiency and better customer outcomes. Marcus Ambrose Paul Agius (; born 22 July 1946) is a British financier and former group chairman of Barclays. Early life and education Marcus Agius was born on 22 July 1946, the son of Ena Eleanora (née Hueffer) and Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Victor Louis Benedict Agius. He is of part Maltese descent, and was educated at St George's College, Weybridge. Stephen Keith Green, Baron Green of Hurstpierpoint (born 7 November 1948), is a British politician, former Conservative Minister of State for Trade and Investment, former group chairman of HSBC Holdings plc, and Anglican priest. Early life and education Stephen Green was born on 7 November 1948 to Dudley Keith Green and Dorothy Rosamund Mary Green (née Wickham). Sir George Ross Mathewson, (born 14 May 1940) is a Scottish businessman. He is best known for transforming the Scottish bank The Royal Bank of Scotland from a struggling regional player into a quasi global bank with parallels to Citigroup or HSBC. He was described by the ''Sunday Herald'', as "banking's answer to Bruce Springsteen". He was the convener of Scotland's Council of Economic Advisers. Nicholas Goodison
Sir Nicholas Proctor Goodison (16 May 1934 – 6 July 2021) was a British businessman who was chairman of the London Stock Exchange from 1976 to 1986. He was an important supporter of the arts and the President of the Furniture History Society (FHS). Career Goodison was born in Watford, the son of Edmund Harold Goodison and Eileen Mary Carrington Proctor. He was educated at Marlborough College and then King's College, Cambridge, of which he was an honorary fellow. He was made a Knight Bachelor in the 1982 New Year Honours. Sir Christopher Jeremy Morse KCMG (10 December 1928 – 4 February 2016) was an English banker, cruciverbalist and chess composer who was Chancellor of the University of Bristol from 1989 to 2003, and was chairman of Lloyds Bank. Early life and education Morse was born in Kensington, London, in 1928, the only son (he had a younger sister) of Francis John Morse, of Lenwade House, Norwich, and his wife, Kinbarra, daughter of barrister Edward Armfield-Marrow. Francis John Morse, the second son of Sir George Henry Morse, a brewer and Lord Mayor of Norwich from 1922 to 1923, was from a junior branch of the landed gentry Morse family of Lound, Suffolk. Leslie O'Brien, Baron O'Brien Of Lothbury
Leslie Kenneth O'Brien, Baron O'Brien of Lothbury (8 February 1908 – 24 November 1995) was Governor of the Bank of England. After attending Wandsworth School, Wandsworth Grammar School in London, he joined the Bank of England in 1927 and rose through the ranks, becoming Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, chief cashier in 1955, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, deputy governor in 1966, before serving as governor from 1966 until 1973. As governor, O'Brien presided over the devaluation of the pound in 1967. He became a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 1967 and was appointed to the Privy Council (United Kingdom), Privy Council in 1970. Following his retirement as governor in 1973 he was created a life peer as Baron O'Brien of Lothbury, of the City of London.
