Brinkley is the most populous city in Monroe County, Arkansas, Monroe County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 2,700, down from 3,188 in 2010 United States census, 2010. Located within the Arkansas Delta, Brinkley was founded as a railroad town in 1872. The city has historically been a transportation and agricultural center in the region, more recently developing a reputation for outdoors recreation and the ivory-billed woodpecker. Birding has become important to the city and region following the purported discovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in 2004, a species thought to be extinct 60 years earlier. ''The Huntley–Brinkley Report'' (sometimes known as ''The Texaco Huntley–Brinkley Report'' for one of its early sponsors) is an American television program broadcast by NBC. Anchored by Chet Huntley in New York City, and David Brinkley in Washington, D.C. It aired from October 29, 1956 to July 31, 1970, replacing ''Camel News Caravan'' and was replaced by ''NBC Nightly News''. The program ran for 15 minutes at its inception but expanded to 30 minutes on September 9, 1963, exactly a week after the ''CBS Evening News'' with Walter Cronkite did so. It was developed and produced initially by Reuven Frank. Frank left the program in 1962 to produce documentaries (Eliot Frankel replaced him) but returned to the program the following year when it expanded to 30 minutes. He was succeeded as executive producer in 1965 by Robert "Shad" Northshield and by Wallace Westfeldt in 1969. USS ''Brinkley Bass'' (DD-887) was a in service with the United States Navy from 1945 to 1973. She was then transferred to Brazil where she served as ''Mariz e Barros'' (D-26) until 1997. The destroyer was finally sunk as a target in 2000. Construction ''Brinkley Bass'' was named for Lieutenant Commander Harry Brinkley Bass (1916–1944), who was killed in action when his plane crashed in combat during the invasion of southern France on 20 August 1944. The destroyer was laid down by the Consolidated Steel Corporation at Orange, Texas on 20 December 1944, launched on 26 May 1945 by Mrs. Percy Bass, mother of Lt. Cmdr. Brinkley High School (BHS) is a comprehensive public junior/senior high school located in Brinkley, Arkansas, United States. For the 2010–11 school year, BHS serves more than 300 students in grades 7 through 12 and is supported by more than 34 educators on a full time equivalent basis. Brinkley High serves portions of Monroe County and Woodruff County and draws students from Brinkley, McCrory, Cotton Plant, Wheatley, Fargo, Moro and Monroe. It is the sole high school of the Brinkley School District. Academics The high school is fully accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE).
