Brighton Vita Malasa
Brighton Vita Malasa is a Malawian who was Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire, one of the four Malawian Anglican dioceses within the Church of the Province of Central Africa. He was Bishop of Upper Shire from 2008 until 2022 when he was excommunicated from the Church by Archbishop Albert Chama of the Church of the Province of Central Africa. He was excommunicated for disobeying church orders after he failed to present himself before Archbishop Albert Chama the primate of the Church of the Province of Central Africa for a discussion following accusations of mismanagement of church funds, adultery, unilateral decisions when transferring church clergy, and appointing cronies to senior positions of the Church's institutions. The Church of the Province of Central Africa is part of the Anglican Communion, and includes 15 dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Primate of the Church is the Archbishop of Central Africa. Albert Chama is the current archbishop, being installed on 20 March 2011, succeeding Bernard Amos Malango who retired in 2007. From 1980 to 2000, Walter Khotso Makhulu, an Anti-Apartheid activist, was Archbishop as well as Bishop of Botswana. Archbishop Chama continues to serve as Bishop of Northern Zambia, and is the second Zambian to be Archbishop of Central Africa. Saulos Klaus Chilima (12 February 1973 – 10 June 2024) was a Malawian economist and politician who served as Vice President of Malawi from 2014 to 2019 and again from 2020 until his death in 2024. Chilima assumed office on 28 June 2020, winning the majority alongside presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera. Chilima also served as the Minister of Economic Planning and Development, as well as Head of Public Sector Reforms, a position he also previously held under the administration of former president Peter Mutharika. Before joining politics, Chilima held key leadership positions in various multi-national companies including Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Airtel Malawi, where he rose to become Chief Executive Officer. On 10 June 2024, a plane carrying Chilima and eight other passengers crashed in Chikangawa Forest Reserve in Mzimba District, killing all onboard. At least 41,000 people attended his state funeral.
