Brighton Council is a local government body in Tasmania, situated in the south-east of the state, north of Hobart. The Brighton local government area is classified as urban and has a population of 18,995, it is based in the town of Brighton but also covers the far northern Hobart suburbs of Bridgewater, Gagebrook, Honeywood and Old Beach. History and attributes The municipality was established on 1 January 1863. Its boundaries were substantially altered during a later reorganisation and a portion of the municipality became part of the Southern Midlands. Brighton is classified as urban, regional and small (URS) under the Australian Classification of Local Governments. Gagebrook is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Brighton in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania, Australia. The locality is about south of the town of Brighton. The 2016 census recorded a population of 1440 for the state suburb of Gagebrook. It is one of the northernmost suburbs of Hobart, located near the eastern shore of the Derwent River between the suburbs of Bridgewater and Old Beach. History Gagebrook was gazetted as a locality in 1977. The suburb, like its adjacent suburb of Bridgewater (also built up of mass-public housing in the 1970s) has a reputation as a lower socio-economic area. Like the rest of Hobart's public housing suburbs, many public housing stock have been sold privately. Otago is a rural residential locality in the local government areas (LGA) of Brighton and Clarence in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south of the town of Brighton. The 2016 census recorded a population of 554 for the state suburb of Otago. It is a suburb of Hobart, located on the shores of Otago Bay. History Otago was gazetted as a locality in 1977. Previously gazetted as Gregson, after Thomas Gregson, the second Premier of Tasmania, the name was changed in 1977. The area takes its name from the iron barque ''Otago'', the only command of the author Joseph Conrad, which was dismantled at a shipbreaking establishment that operated at the bay (formerly known simply as part of Old Beach) between the 1920s and 1960s. Boyer is a rural locality in the local government areas (LGA) of Brighton and Derwent Valley in the Hobart and South-east LGA regions of Tasmania. The locality is about south-west of the town of Brighton. The 2016 census recorded a population of 40 for the state suburb of Boyer. It is a town on the eastern side of the River Derwent, opposite and slightly downstream of New Norfolk. History Boyer was gazetted as a locality in 1970. It is named after a family who first settled in the area in the early 19th century. Specialising in newsprint and magazine-grade paper, the Boyer Mill was established by Australian Newsprint Mills in 1941. Pontville, Tasmania
Pontville is a rural locality in the local government areas (LGA) of Brighton and Southern Midlands in the Hobart and Central LGA regions of Tasmania. The locality is about north-west of the town of Brighton. The 2016 census has a population of 623 for the state suburb of Pontville. It is a small rural community north of Hobart, in the south-east of Tasmania. History Pontville was sited by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821, and was an early garrison town, where convicts built the bridge over the Jordan River. During World Wars I and II the area had a major army camp. There is an old sandstone bridge in Pontville that lies on the Jordan River. The bridge is part of the Midland Highway. A railway line connected the town with Hobart from 1891 until 1947. Additional excursion trains operated from Hobart, bringing riflemen to the nearby range.
