Brief Encounter (opera)
''Brief Encounter'' is an opera in two acts by composer André Previn. The English libretto by John Caird is based on Noël Coward's play ''Still Life'' and Coward's screenplay for the 1945 David Lean film ''Brief Encounter''. Commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera, the opera premiered on May 1, 2009 in Houston, Texas at the Wortham Theater Center. The production starred Elizabeth Futral as Laura Jesson and Nathan Gunn as Alec Harvey, with Rebekah Camm, Meredith Arwady, Robert Orth, and Kim Josephson as supporting soloists and Patrick Summers conducting. A recording was issued on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Elizabeth Futral
Susan Elizabeth Futral (born September 27, 1963 in Johnston County, North Carolina) is an American coloratura soprano who has won acclaim (as both singer and actress) throughout the United States as well as in Europe, South America, and Japan. Early life and education Born in Johnston County, North Carolina, Futral grew up in Covington, Louisiana. She earned a bachelor's degree in music performance from Samford University. After studying with Virginia Zeani at Indiana University, she spent two years as an apprentice with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1991, she was a winner of the New York Metropolitan Opera National Council. Gregor Herzfeld
Gregor Herzfeld (born in 1975) is a German musicologist. Life and career Herzfeld studied musicology and philosophy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and at the "Scuola di Paleografia musicale" from 1996 to 2001. In 2001 he obtained the Magister Artium with a thesis on the US-American composers Elliott Carter and Morton Feldman. From 2002 to 2005 he was research fellow at the Musicology Department of the University of Heidelberg. Patrick Summers (born August 14, 1963) is an American Conducting, conductor best known for his work with Houston Grand Opera (HGO), where he has been the artistic and music director since 2011, and with San Francisco Opera, where he served as principal guest conductor, 1999–2016. __TOC__ Early years and San Francisco Summers was born in Washington, Indiana, and raised in Loogootee, Indiana.
