Dorset Council (UK)
Dorset Council is the local authority for the non-metropolitan county of Dorset in England. It is a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council. The non-metropolitan county is smaller than the ceremonial county of Dorset, which also includes Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The council was created in 2019 when local government across Dorset was reorganised. The council has been under Liberal Democrat majority control since the 2024 election. It is based at County Hall in Dorchester. Bradpole
Bradpole is a village in the civil parish of Bridport, in south west Dorset, England, in the Brit valley, outside Bridport. In the 2011 census the population of the parish was 2,339. In 1651 Charles II passed through Bradpole in his efforts to evade capture after he failed to sail to France from Charmouth following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. An inscribed stone in the south of the parish, where Lee Lane meets the A35 trunk road between Bridport and Dorchester, marks the place where he took a turning off the main road to escape from his pursuers. Bradpole is the birthplace of industrialist and Liberal Party politician William Edward Forster (1818–1886), who was instrumental in bringing through the 1870 Elementary Education Act. He is commemorated by the village Memorial Hall. The parish church was built in 1845, following two previous buildings on the same site. Its communion cup dates from the 16th century. 2024 Dorset Council Election
The 2024 Dorset Council election took place on Thursday 2 May 2024 to elect all 82 councillors to Dorset Council (UK), Dorset Council in England, the same day as other 2024 United Kingdom local elections, local elections in the United Kingdom. Dorset Council was previously controlled by the Conservatives, who won the 2019 Dorset Council election, first election to the Council in 2019. The 2024 election was the last for a five-year term of office; after 2029, elections will take place every four years. Eype
Eype ( ) is a small village in southwest Dorset, England, situated southwest of Bridport. It lies on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site on the English Channel and is within the Civil parishes in England, civil parish of Symondsbury. Eype means "steep place". Many of the village buildings can be traced back to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries, but little is known in detail until the Victorian era. To the west of Eype Beach is Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast of England at above sea level. In 2011 a beach hut at Eype Beach went on the market for £200,000. A notable resident was the antiques dealer Paul Atterbury. Symondsbury
Symondsbury () is a village and civil parish in southwest Dorset, England, west of Bridport and west of Dorchester. The A35 road runs through the parish to the south of the village. The village has a pub (the Ilchester Arms), a pottery and a primary school. Symondsbury parish extends from Eype and West Cliff (West Bay) in the south, to the Marshwood Vale in the north. The village is in the Dorset National Landscape area. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 1,059. Toponymy The name Symondsbury derives from Old English and means the hill or barrow (''beorg'') belonging to a man named ''Sigemund''. It was listed in the Domesday Book as ''Simondesberge''. West Bay, Dorset
West Bay, originally known as Bridport Harbour, is a small harbour settlement and resort on the English Channel coast in Dorset, England, sited at the mouth of the River Brit approximately south of Bridport. The area is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The harbour at West Bay is not a natural landscape feature and it has a long history of having been silted up, blocked by shingle and damaged by storms, and each time repairs, improvements and enlargements have subsequently been made. The harbour has been moved twice: it was originally inland, then was moved to the coast beside the East Cliff, then was moved again along the coast to the west, where it is located today. The previous main commercial trade of the harbour—exporting Bridport's ropes and nets—declined in the second half of the 19th century. Bothenhampton
Bothenhampton is a village in the civil parish of Bridport, in southwest Dorset, England, just outside the town of Bridport. It is separated from the town only by the River Asker and the A35 Bridport by-pass. In the 2011 census the civil parish—which includes the settlement of Walditch—had a population of 2,131. The parish church, Holy Trinity, was designed by the Arts and Crafts movement architect Edward Schroeder Prior in 1889. It was his first church. By the late 19th century the 15th century Old Holy Trinity Church had fallen into disrepair. There are Commonwealth War Gravesin the old churchyard. The new church was funded by J. P. F. Gundry, one of the directors of the West Bay Building Company, by public subscription and anonymous donation. The roof is the most radical feature of the church. Bridport is a market town and civil parish in Dorset, England, inland from the English Channel near the confluence of the River Brit and its tributary the River Asker, Asker. Allington, Dorset
Allington is a neighbourhood of Bridport in Dorset, England, immediately north-west of Bridport town centre on the west bank of the River Brit. Formerly a separate village and civil parish, Allington and Bridport had grown to be contiguous by the end of the 19th century. Allington Hill rises to above the town; it is managed by the Woodland Trust. The hill is characteristic of the Upper Greensand hills and ridges found in the Marshwood and Powerstock Vales national character area, National Character Area.
