Brick Smith
Brick Dudley Smith (born May 2, 1959) is an American former Major League Baseball first baseman who played for the Seattle Mariners in 1987 and 1988. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Smith was named after his paternal grandfather who was also named Brick. He played college baseball for Wake Forest University. In 1979 and 1980, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League, helping lead the team to the league championship in 1979, and winning the league's Sportsmanship Award and Thurman Munson Award for Batting Champion the following season. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes.
