Brian Stanley (politician)
Brian Stanley (born January 1958) is an Irish independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Laois (Dáil constituency), Laois constituency since the 2024 Irish general election, 2024 general election, and previously from 2016 to 2020. He was a TD for the Laois–Offaly (Dáil constituency), Laois–Offaly constituency from 2020 to 2024, and previously from 2011 to 2016. He served as Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (Ireland), Public Accounts Committee from July 2020 to October 2024. Political career Stanley unsuccessfully contested the 2002 Irish general election, 2002 and 2007 Irish general election, 2007 general elections in Laois-Offaly. A Teachta Dála ( ; ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish language, Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas, the parliament of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The official English translation of the term is "Dáil Deputy". An equivalent position would be a Member of parliament, Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK or Member of Congress in the USA. The 1999 Irish local elections were held in all the counties, cities and towns of Ireland on Friday, 11 June 1999, on the same day as the European elections. Ireland was divided into local government areas of administrative counties and county boroughs, in which the local authorities had last been elected at the 1991 local elections, and a second tier in certain areas of boroughs, urban districts and towns, in which the local authorities had last been elected at the 1994 local elections. Kangaroo court is an informal pejorative term for a court that ignores recognized standards of law or justice, carries little or no official standing in the territory within which it resides, and is typically convened ad hoc. A kangaroo court may ignore due process and come to a predetermined conclusion. Warrenpoint Ambush
The Warrenpoint ambush, also known as the Narrow Water ambush, the Warrenpoint massacre or the Narrow Water massacre, was a guerrilla attack by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (Provisional IRA) on 27 August 1979. The Provisional IRA's South Armagh Brigade ambushed a British Army convoy with two large roadside bombs at Narrow Water Castle outside Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland. The first bomb was aimed at the convoy itself, and the second targeted the incoming reinforcements and the command point set up to deal with the incident. Provisional IRA volunteers hidden in nearby woodland also allegedly fired on the troops, who returned fire. The castle is on the banks of the Newry River, which marks the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
