Brian Lloyd (rower)
Charles Brian Murray Lloyd (11 March 1927 – 19 July 1995) was an English rower who competed for Great Britain in the 1948 Summer Olympics and the 1952 Summer Olympics. Lloyd was born at Richmond, London and attended the Shore School and St John's College, Cambridge, where he rowed for Lady Margaret Boat Club. In 1948 most of the victorious Cambridge crew of the Boat Race also rowed for Leander Club at Henley Royal Regatta and the Leander eight were then selected to row for Great Britain in the 1948 Summer Olympics. Lloyd was one of the replacements for Cambridge men who were ineligible for the Great Britain team. Great Britain went on to win the silver medal. Lloyd was in the winning Cambridge crews in the 1949, 1950 and 1951 Boat Races. In 1949 he was in the Lady Margaret crew which won the Ladies' Challenge Plate at Henley Royal Regatta in record time. Richmond is a town in south-west London,The London Government Act 1963 (c.33) (as amended) categorises the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames as an Outer London borough. The Silver Goblets & Nickalls' Challenge Cup is a rowing event for men's coxless pairs at the annual Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames at Henley-on-Thames in England. It is open to male crews from all eligible rowing clubs. Two clubs may combine to make an entry. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. In some strict terminologies, using oars for propulsion may be termed either "pulling" or "rowing", with different definitions for each. Where these strict terminologies are used, the definitions are reversed depending on the context.
