Brian Johnston (linebacker)
Brian Thomas Johnston (born May 2, 1986) is a former American football linebacker. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He played college football at Gardner–Webb. Early years Johnston was a defensive end at Madison High School in San Diego, California, where he was a two-time First-team All-Harbor League selection (as a junior and senior). He totaled 82 tackles (30 solo), 10 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and six passes defensed as a senior. College career For his career (2004–2007) Johnston played in 42 games and started 40 at Gardner–Webb. His career totals were 268 tackles (124 solo), 21 sacks and 55.5 tackles for loss, ten forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, six passes defensed, and one blocked kick. Linebacker
Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). How a linebacker plays their position depends on the defensive alignment, the philosophy of the coaching staff, and the particular play the offense may call. Buck Buchanan Award
The Buck Buchanan Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding defensive player in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) of college football, and was first given in 1995 after the Walter Payton Award was designated solely for offensive players. It was named in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Buck Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State University. Buchanan was an All-American defensive lineman and the first overall pick in the 1963 American Football League (AFL) Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Up until 2015, the Payton and Buchanan Awards were awarded by The Sports Network. The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit.
