Brian James Barnes
Sir Brian James Barnes, (23 March 1933 – 9 May 2017) was a Roman Catholic archbishop. Born in Australia, Barnes professed as a member of Order of Friars Minor in 1952. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1958. He served as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aitape, Papua New Guinea from 1987 to 1997. He then served as archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port Moresby from 1997 to 2008. Between 1993 and 1994, he was the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. The Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (short: CBCPNGSI) is the national episcopal conference of the bishops of the Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea and in the Solomon Islands. It brings together 22 bishops and archbishops who represent all the Catholic dioceses in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. The Bishops Conference's work is coordinated by a general secretariat located in Port Moresby. Since January 2025, the Secretary-General is Father Lawrence Arockiaraj. Most Reverend Sir Peter Kurongku, KBE (1930 – 11 June 1996) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Born in 1930 at Tonnui, he was ordained a priest of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea on 21 December 1966 by Archbishop Daniel Stuyvenberg. On 15 November 1978 he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Honiara, Solomon Islands and as Titular Bishop of Sinnuara on 25 March 1979. John Ribat
Sir John Ribat (born 9 February 1957) is a Papua New Guinean prelate of the Catholic Church and a cardinal since 2016. He has been Archbishop of Port Moresby since 2008. Biography Ribat was born in Volavolo, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. He professed as a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in February 1979. He was ordained a priest on 1 December 1985. He worked as a parish priest, continued his studies in Manila, and served as master of novices for the Missionaries in Suva, Fiji. On 30 October 2000, Pope John Paul II named him auxiliary bishop of Bereina and titular bishop of Macriana Minor. He was consecrated bishop on 11 February 2001 and named Bishop of Bereina on 12 February 2002. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or a dame if female.
