Brecon RFC
Brecon Rugby Football Club () is a rugby union club from the town of Brecon, Mid Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for Cardiff Rugby. Since 2024, the club has played in the Welsh Premier Division. Origins The club was one of the eleven founding members of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881. Brecon, along with Pontypool RFC, Pontypool, Llandovery College, Lampeter College, Llandeilo RFC, Llandeilo and Merthyr RFC, Merthyr inaugurated the South Wales Cup competition in the 1877-78 season. The first recorded match with a Brecon rugby team first appeared on 9 November 1867 in "The Brecon County Times" where a Town team from Brecon lost 2-0 to Christ's College, Brecon on 6 November 1867. An ad appeared on 24 October 1868, in The Brecon County Times, stating the formation of a new club in the town, playing their inaugural match on 21 October 1868 on the cricket field, with the captain's side beating the secretaries side. Brecon
Brecon (; ; ), archaically known as Brecknock, is a market town in Powys, mid Wales. In 1841, it had a population of 5,701. The population in 2001 was 7,901, increasing to 8,250 at the 2011 census. Historically it was the county town of Brecknockshire (Breconshire); although its role as such was eclipsed with the formation of the County of Powys, it remains an important local centre. Welsh Championship
The WRU National Championship (or Admiral Championship for sponsorship reasons) is the third tier of professional rugby union in Wales. The league was reformed by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) in 2012. History In 2012, the new division was formed from the restructuring of the Welsh Premier Division. The Premier Division was 'slimmed down' to 12 teams with Pontypool RFC and Tonmawr RFC relegated from the division. Glamorgan Wanderers are a Welsh rugby union club based in Ely, west Cardiff in Wales. The club is located just to the north of Western Cemetery. They currently play in the WRU Admiral Championship. The Welsh Rugby Union Specsavers Division One East is a rugby union league in Wales. It was 'born' out of a restructure of the former league system that had formally begun in Wales for the 1990/91 season. As a result of the restructure of 2006, the WRU decided to divide the then Division One into two leagues, East and WRU Division One West, West, and Division 1 East was implemented and became a regular part of the fixture list. In 2014, another restructure of Welsh Rugby's league system saw more changes within the Division One tier. This introduced an additional 2 leagues at this level bringing the total number of Division 1 leagues up to 4. Merthyr RFC is a Wales, Welsh rugby union club based in Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. Merthyr RFC are members of the Welsh Rugby Union, playing in the Principality Premiership, and are a feeder club for Cardiff Rugby. Early history Merthyr's first reported match was an association football match played on 14/09/1876, when Merthyr lost 3-0 to Mr. Lloyd's School (Merthyr). Llandeilo Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the town of Llandeilo, in Carmarthenshire, west Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Scarlets. History Early history A Carmarthen Journal from 1871 first confirms the existence of Llandeilo RFC; when it covered an event between the club and three other teams, namely Neath, Lampeter College and Llandovery College. In their inaugural year Llandeilo RFC played on a ground known as the Bridge Field. Due to the death of one of their players, rugby in Llandeilo appeared to wane and the game lost support. Pontypool RFC
Pontypool Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in the town of Pontypool, which plays in the Super Rygbi Cymru league. Since the regionalisation of Welsh rugby in 2003, Pontypool RFC is now a feeder club to the Dragons regional team. Pontypool play their home matches at Pontypool Park. Their traditional home kit is a red, white and black-hooped shirt and socks with white shorts, although they did gradually shift to wearing black shorts post-2003.
