Bread And Roses (2023 Film)
''Bread and Roses'' is a 2023 American documentary film about women in Afghanistan and the role of the Taliban. It was directed and produced by Sahra Mani. It was co-produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi for their company Excellent Cadaver after Lawrence saw news coverage of the 2021 Taliban offensive as U.S. troops withdrew. The documentary features footage from Sharifa, an ex-government employee forced indoors, Zahra, a woman organizing activists in her dentistry practice, and Taranom, who seeks refuge in Pakistan. It debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim, and is scheduled to be released in select theaters on November 22, 2024 before an Apple TV+ platform release. Hayedeh Safiyari ( fa, هایده صفییاری; born 27 June 1959) is an Iranian film editor and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She graduated in Art Cinema from a reputed University in Iran and decided to pursue her professional career in movie editing. Immediately after graduating from the university, she was recruited in the national TV of Iran. Zarifa Ghafari (, ; born 1994) is a former female mayor of Maidan Shahr, capital city of the Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Ghafari was one of the few Afghan female mayors, next to the first Afghanistan's mayor, Azra Jafari and Khadija Zahra Ahmadi, and was also the youngest to be appointed, at the age of 24. She is known for her efforts to advance women's rights in Afghanistan. Ghafari was chosen as an International Woman of Courage in 2020 by the US Secretary of State.
